Pretentious and unreal.

This book was so annoying that I could only read a few chapters. The writing was flowery and stilted. The vocabulary in the dialogues bore little resemblance to how people actually speak. Early on I found myself skipping whole paragraphs out of boredom. I called it quits when she was preparing to teach another inmate to read. Her smug, condescending attitude and the child-like adoration of the other woman for her was unbelievable. I disliked the main character, which doesn't make for a pleasant read.
A woman being psychologically and physically abused does not present as this woman did. I found it lacked credibility and makes me wonder about the integrity of the writer.

Harrowing - but a must read!

I started reading this book knowing it was going to be about domestic violence but had no idea just how harrowing a read it was going to be. The first quarter of the book is a little slow but necessary to understand Kate's life later in the book , when she reflects her previous life with her husband Mark.
At times I struggled to continue reading some of the detailed chapters as the story is explicit and fearful. Yet other times I couldn't put the book down because I was desperate to know the outcome. The cliche 'You never know what goes on behind closed doors' is a true description of this book.

A very promising new author. I will definitely read more of her work!

Extremely well written but not realistic

The reason why I cannot give this book 5 stars is because, despite it being extremely well written, I'm not sure how realistic it is for a smart intelligent and educated woman in the 21st century to silently tolerate such a high level of abuse. With helplines, and internet support I cannot believe she had not explored other ways out of her unendurable situation. Even though I can understand her reasons for killing her brute of a husband, it may have been better to have exposed the man he really was to the outside world and have him sent to prison. I can understand the anger her children felt towards her as they knew nothing of the abuse, it may have been better if she had at least confided in them about it first. Despite all this, it was a harrowing story and it was written very well.

Any Sign of a Sequel??!! Please...

Have you ever been so immersed in a story that all distractions fell away? Yeah, I know you have. Me too, with this book...so, you can imagine my surprise when I swipe across the screen and that's it! It's done. It's over. Just like that. Gah! So frustrating.

Is this a bad thing? Or a sign of a very good writer? I'm inclined to think that Anna Martin isn't just a very talented storyteller but also a masterminding self-promoter, salesperson, swindler (lol jk) because now I feel the need to search out her other books and stalk her media platforms for any sign of a sequel.

A sequel would be so welcome because I hadn't nearly enough time to enjoy Caleb and Luc. Their relationship was really just beginning, and while I see the value of the hopeful ending as is, I feel like I've been broken up with unexpectedly with no closure. So, how do I move on? I just don't know (besides the aforementioned stalking, that is).

At this point, you're probably wondering why "Signs" would warrant stalking, so I'll tell you:

It's a story about a young man, Caleb, who is deaf, but is much more than his deafness. And, it's a story of young man, Luc, who is a little on the outside (Lonely? Broken? Misunderstood?), but embraces it. It's all about their getting to know one another and falling in love and finding their way through life as a team- whether it's helping Caleb with his poor communication skills or Luc find peace with unchangeable things. It's a beautiful story, without the need for any superfluous extras.

It's worth the read. And, it's worthy of a sequel, too.

Loved the story and its characters. I thought the characters were very realistic, and I got sucked into their story very quickly. New to me author but now I've read two I'll be definitely more.

This was a very nice story with a lot of interest in it, and I learned a lot. Two nice you g men trying to help each other as much as they could - a very equitable relationship. I didn't think the writing style translated into a good reading style at the beginning, but either I got used to it or it improved. I liked the way the author ex-plained how she had chosen to write the ASL.

What a beautiful story of healing, love, growth, independence, and the discovery of strength between two young men: Luc and Caleb. I wish this story had been placed in the YA category because the MCs were both high school seniors on the precipice of adulthood, but being in the gay contemporary romance category, I can still give this book a high score, but I really feel as if this story resonates stronger with a younger audience. I know that as a father when it comes to books, any books, especially YA books I read them with an eye toward if I think they would be acceptable for my daughter. As I read this I saw my daughter within the character of Luc. A hurting character, broken and fragile inside, who tries to appear unflappable, unfeeling, and uncaring, but is actually, deep, selfless, intelligent, talented, and extremely giving. Just as Luc found his Caleb, someone with inner strength despite the circumstances and hardships thrown at him, determined to succeed, someone who brings out the best in Luc, I want my own daughter to find her "Caleb" or "Cala". These characters were so beautifulły portrayed that I was emotionally invested in them and found myself cheering them on throughout the book. The setting of the book was easy for me to immerse myself in, though perhaps that is because I used to live in New York, but the author's style of writing took me right back there. The only downfall is that every so often there would be an abrupt shift in the POV from Caleb to Luc or vice versa. It was jarring. Other than that, This was an amazing read and I immediately recommended it to my daughter.

Great love story

A story of falling in love. Knowing what they have is the real thing and doing everything to make it work. Love how the author did not fall back on using angst and instead told a story of dealing with life and what happened finding that one person that makes everything ok. If you are looking for a great feel good story, this is the story.

About the Author

Gunnery Sgt. Jack Coughlin was the Marine Corps' highest ranked sniper in the Iraq War. He served with the the Third Battalion, Fourth Marines during the drive to Baghdad and has operated on a wide range of assignments in hot spots around the world. He is co-author of the Kyle Swanson Sniper Novels.

Captain Casey S. Kuhlman left the Marines after the Iraq War. He studied at Vanderbilt University Law School, and is now a lawyer and social entrepeneur working in Somaliland.

Donald A. Davis is the author of Lightning Strike: The Secret Mission to Kill Admiral Yamamoto and Avenge Pearl Harbor, and numerous other books, including several New York Times bestsellers. He lives outside Boulder, Colorado.

Inside the Mind of a Sniper

We're all raised hearing things like, "Don't hit your brother," and "Be a good boy," etc. So how does one go from being taught to "be nice" to being a trained killer? Shooter takes you inside the mind of a sniper. The author is a trained professional, and takes his "art" (as he refers to it) very seriously. Because he and others like him are experts at their job, American lives are saved. He admits to being haunted by his former targets in his dreams and is open about the strain of being deployed had on his marriage. Recommended.

So much potential...wasted

The book is a fairly quick read, if you can wade through the neverending pumped up ego of this guy. "A guy on my team got one kill there...I would have gotten 10..." Many more statements like that throughout.

Interesting review here from someone here claiming they were in the 3/4 and Coughlin was not involved in the hottest action in Iraq. You really get that sense in reading the book, despite his best efforts to convince us otherwise.

Overall, not a bad read, but I'm sure there are betters on the subject matter. Also, can someone please find an editor who actually reviews the draft before print? Spelling/grammar errors throughout.

disciplined killer a necessary good

How do we respond to those who would kill us? In this book Marine sniper Coughlin gives a great deal of answers....and shows the question cannot really be answered, just dealt with. We've really only been in one war that we started...the Revolutionary War. All others have been "responses" to threats.....and therein lies the trouble. Many Americans don't want to respond, or think we respond too much or too little. It is up to men like Coughlin to do our dirty work....just as cops must deal with drunks and molesters.

In this book I learned that the Marines are taught to kill....not to decide on what is a battlefield or what is not...once they're there...that's it. Coughlin must decide for himself, if the threat is a real one or not....and he does so with intelligence, training, and responsibiity. His personal reactions, and emotional battles with his "job" are a microcosm of the experience of all big countries....when and how does a civilized society kill its enemies, and who are they?

The book doesn't, and really cannot, answer these questons. What it does do, is give an insight into the dedication and integrity of the Marines through the experience of one man. It also gives a first person account of the Iraq war, which is lacking by the coverage of the highly filtered "news media" who refuse to respect men like Coughlin, and choose to see him rather as a pawn of a political game, which he clearly is not. The book helps us separate the man from the military operation....too often we are taught to trash vets like those from Vietnam who were not responsible for the decision making...only for doing their job with dedication and whatever honor they could retrieve from the situation.

This book tosses all of these issues out there....but leaves you with a respect for the military men who must deal with threats....and the discussion then turns again on what is a threat....we will always wrestle with these problems as a culture and as a nation, and must always hold in the highest esteem those who risk their lives to allow us the comfort and luxury to discuss these issues. In many Third World countries, there is no opportunity to discuss these issues....

Excellent for moving your Organization

I convinced my organization to purchase this for each of it's 110 supervisors and 8 managers. We used it at the bi-monthly meetings as a training topic and to help us begin to share a similar language.

I suggest you buy and provide many, many bioks for supervisors and managers to help keep us current and thinking!
