About the Author
Growing up in Chicago at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition, Richard T. Schaefer found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people’s jobs. His interest in social issues caused him to gravitate to sociology courses at Northwestern University, where he received a B.A. in Sociology. "Originally as an undergraduate I thought I would go on to law school and become a lawyer. But after taking a few sociology courses, I found myself wanting to learn more about what sociologists studied and fascinated by the kinds of questions they raised." This fascination led him to obtain his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Schaefer’s continuing interest in race relations led him to write his masters’ thesis on the membership of the Ku Klux Klan and his doctoral thesis on racial prejudice and race relations in Great Britain. Dr. Schaefer went on to become a professor of sociology. He has taught introductory sociology for 30 years to students in colleges, adult education programs, nursing programs, and even a maximum-security prison. Dr. Schaefer’s love of teaching is apparent in his interaction with his students. "I find myself constantly learning from the students who are in my classes and from reading what they write. Their insights into the material we read or current events that we discuss often become part of future course material and sometimes even find their way into my writing." Dr. Schaefer is author of the third edition of Sociology: A Brief Introduction (McGraw-Hill, 2000). Dr. Schaefer is also the author of Racial and Ethnic Groups now in its eighth edition, and Race and Ethnicity in the United States, second edition. His articles and book reviews have appeared in many journals, including American Journal of Sociology, Phylon: A Review of Race and Culture, Contemporary Sociology, Sociology and Social Research, Sociological Quarterly, and Teaching Sociology. He served as president of the Midwest Sociological Society in 1994-1995. Dr. Schaefer’s advice to students is to "look at the material and make connections to your own life and experiences. Sociology will make you a more attentive observer of how people in groups interact and function. It will also make you more aware of peoples’ different needs and interests — and perhaps more ready to work for the common good, while still recognizing the individuality of each person."

This is a great companion to Gurdjieff's works, good for those just starting or well acquainted with his writings. Ms. Wellbeloved demystifies several subjects, not just to make it easier for us, but to prompt more questions from us.

Key Book of Key Conepts

This work is a remarkable condensation, written with great clarity and comprehension, of the words and terms that appear in the writings by and about G.I. Gurdjieff. The entries devoted to Astrology, Enneagram, and Zodiac are particularly insightful and valuable. But those that explain meanings behind everyday words like Fear, Music, Time, etc., are worth reading and considering--not to mention such obscure and work-specific neologisms as Hasnamuss, Legomonism, and Solioonensius. In all, there are 300 explanatory entries arranged alphabetically. Paul Beekman Taylor contributes a fine Foreword, and Sophia Wellbeloved has added a 12-page bibliography, a 4-page index, and biographical entries on 30 or so of Gurdjieff's pupils, both major and minor. "Gurdjieff: The Key Concepts" is a key book.

Fascinating Fiction, especially for fans of the film

Film fans who love the movie version will enjoy the book on which it was based, but should be prepared for how very different the novel is. Readers will see what an arduous task it was to adapt as a screenplay...and what a commendable job they (and the director & stars) did, as well. Since virutally no one nowadays will read the book first, it serves as an interesting character study into the psychology of the Jane and Blanche characters. And if anyone saw the ghastly TV movie remake starring the Redgrave sisters and John Glover, you will hope they hold on tightly to the novel and leave well enough alone!!

Wow - What A THRILLER !

This book reads like a dream. The language flows effortlessly and the imagery of even the simplest scenes creates vivid pictures in your mind.

It is a psychological tale, yet the pages turn like a mystery. The two main characters are sisters Jane and Blanche. Both past middle age, lamenting the loss of their youth and the personal injustices life has befallen them. Blanche is crippled and at the mercy of Jane - wonderfully delusional and unbalanced. The terror mounts as matters get slowly but progressively dark, as Jane spirals into a deranged world. Jane reminds me of a sinister child in many ways... selfish, cruel, spiteful and completely delusional. And like a child - actions have no consequence, feelings are flippant and opinions are made on a whim. A situation that is a living hell for Blanche, crippled in her room cut off from all contact to the outside world.

As Jane becomes increasingly unhinged, Blanche is subjected to the horrors of Jane's mind that manifect themselves in the most creative of psychological tortues. i.e There is an instance where Jane brings to Blanche's room her lunch tray, and leaving it pointedly covered, exits the room. When Blanche uncovers her lunch tray and settles in to eat... "She saw now what she had not seen before; the entire meal had been carefully sprinkled over with fine, white sand." And therein, the chapter ends. It leaves you to ponder the mental state of a person who would prepare a delightful meal, deliver it on a silver tray and go to the effort of painstakingly covering it with sand. Horror? No... but that's just the beginning...

Clearly, the reader sides with Blanche and waits with baited breath to see her escape, yet Jane is at times portrayed achingly real. You find yourself empathising with this sad, disturbed, fragile creature.

Having seen the movie, i can say in this instance the book and movie complement eachother. Both offering different things, both fabulous!

Frustrating!

I don't know if I got a randomly flawed copy of if they're all like this, but disc five contains chapters 12-15, except the chapters are played in reverse order. All tracks in each chapter is chronological, but how maddening! And chapter 12, the final 24th track, is only about a quarter of a short chapter and the rest of the tracks are nowhere to be found in the set. Good think I had a print copy to help me figure out where things went. Without the rest of chapter 12, I couldn't ever rip and burn a new CD for disc 5 in correct order. BEWARE!

About the Author
Mike Peng is the Jindal Chair of Global Business Strategy at the Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas. A National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award winner, Professor Peng is a fellow with the Academy of International Business and listed among Thomson Reuters' The World's Most Influential Scientific Minds. His recent research awards include the Journal of International Business Studies Decade Award (2015) and the Academy of Management Perspectives Best Impact Award (2014). He holds a bachelor's degree from Winona State University, Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to joining UT Dallas, Professor Peng was on the faculty at The Ohio State University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Hawaii. In addition, he has held visiting or courtesy appointments in Australia, Britain, Canada, China, Denmark, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. This award-winning professor is widely regarded as one of the most prolific and influential scholars in global business, and he has garnered many research grants for his work. The United Nations and the World Bank have cited his work in major publications. AN AVERAGE VAR BOOK

This book well explains what is Value At Risk and the concept of risk management in banks. Business concepts are complete. The author gives a lot of weight in risk control.
However, he lacks to give detailed examples on how to calculate VAR, the mathematics/statistics behind. Spreadsheets are nice but not complete from the beginning to the end. Important statistical methods are described without enough detail leaving the concepts out the book's scope.

Excellent introduction

The book is a modern introduction to the whole field of 'intelligent systems' (IS) which is broadly what we used to call AI before the term fell out of favour. It is very much an introduction "suitable for a first course in IS...anywhere from the junior level undergraduate to first year graduate level". It is 700+ pages of excellence. It covers a wide range of subjects, is grounded in practical use of freely available tools (Protege, CLIPS, Soar, etc.,) and is written by someone who clearly understands what it is like to be unfamiliar with the subject and the kind of questions that beginners ask. It doesn't drown you with algebra, but uses enough to illustrate the points being made. It concentrates almost more on worked examples of CSPs, rule sets, blackboards, decision trees, fuzzy logic and all kinds of other stuff than it does on maths. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a comprehensive and highly readable introductory overview of IS.

The Marbling Technique Bible

I spent a week at my cottage alone with this book and supplies. There are so many helpful hints and information that by the end of the week I had mastered the technique and produced gorgeous silk scarves. I sold the majority of them at an Art show the next week. I couldn't have done it without this book that was recommended to me.

About the Author
Gerald Durrell was born in Jamshedpur, India, in 1925. He returned to England in 1928 before settling on the island of Corfu with his family. In 1945 he joined the staff of Whipsnade Park as a student keeper, and in 1947 he led his first animal-collecting expedition to the Cameroons. He later undertook numerous further expeditions, visiting Paraguay, Argentina, Sierra Leone, Mexico, Mauritius, Assam and Madagascar. His first television programme, Two in the Bush¸ which documented his travels to New Zealand, Australia and Malaya was made in 1962; he went on to make seventy programmes about his trips around the world. In 1959 he founded the Jersey Zoological Park, and in 1964 he founded the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. He was awarded the OBE in 1982. Encouraged to write about his life's work by his brother, Durrell published his first book, The Overloaded Ark, in 1953. It soon became a bestseller and he went on to write thirty-six other titles, including My Family and Other Animals, The Bafut Beagles, Encounters with Animals, The Drunken Forest, A Zoo in My Luggage, The Whispering Land, Menagerie Manor, The Amateur Naturalist and The Aye-Aye and I. Gerald Durrell died in 1995.

I read the Trilogy in one stride

All in all, this trilogy is a pretty collection of must read books. However, I regret reading it in a stride.

I heard about 'My family and other animals' a few times before, but finaly took it to read upon an acquaintance' recommendation. I took a trilogy because it paid off (t was a good one book price for three) and I like having books of a collection neatly sticking together.
It is also a good edition - I haven't got a complaint about it.

About the content.
As said, 'My family and other animals' is a must-read. The author poured his soul on the pages, his enthusiasm is tangible and contagious. There's also a faint child-like feel to the first book, to the stories about first encounters with earthly creatures and the family's reactions to young Gerald's growing "managerie".
The stories are hillarious, made me want to learn more about some of the animals (I knew only a few of them, like dogs and a donkey, but I had to search the web for geckos, spiders and various beetles).

The three books in the Corfu Trilogy were not written consequently, and it shows. While the language improved visibly, the style changed as well. Not necessarily in a bad sense (some of the best, the most funny stories are in the third book), but it's visible. The style difference is what prevented me from giving the Trilogy five stars.

What bothered me personally was reading the same chronology three times repeated. The stories are different each time, but to me it was a little boring knowing Gerry was through growing up once or twice already. So, I recommend reading the Trilogy in three chunks, with at least a few months in-between. Start with 'My family and other animals'.

This is the first time I have read Gerald Durell, and it was a magnificent read! Because of his unusual upbringing, he uses words that are highly descriptive and makes you 'see' the things he describes. I was totally lost in the richness of his writing, and highly recommend that you just read the trilogy in as much of one sitting as you can because it is like having a lavish meal from entree to dessert all in one....

I've just received a Kindle WiFi for a Christmas present. One of the first ebooks I purchased was this much loved and warmly remembered book about Gerald Durrell's childhood in Corfu.

I'm delighted to have a good copy again as my old ones are getting very dog eared now.

I can highly recommend these stories and can't imagine anyone who would not enjoy the gentle humour and acute observations.

Not very useful for real projects.

The textbook only covers basics. It is a book for beginners and for low level college introductory microcontroller courses. The book not very useful for real projects. The author give me an impression that he just started to learn about AVR right before starting to write this book. In this book, it is not much explanation on the hardware features; being able to connect to external memory for ATmega128. Author use for examples Atmega32. Interfaces examples no cover CAN and USB connections to AVR. No cover connection to graphics matrix displays.

I will start of by saying that out of all the text books I have come across this is by far one of the best.

I need this book for part of an engineering degree, focused on the AVR micro-controller. Coming form a programing degree I found this book very good, clear and it is filled with useful examples.
One thing i loved about the book is that it was written in a way that it can be used by people with little experience with programing, or anyone who is new to Assembly and embedded systems programing.

I loved the introductory chapters as they gave you are feel and solid back round in AVR and computing.
One more note that I found very important was the fact that as the examples got more complicated they often had both C and assembly side by side which helps give a better perspective of what you are doing.

Book used for College Assembly Course

This is the book assigned for an Assembly class I am taking.

The scope of this book is not stated on Amazon, but this book is intended for college students learning Assembly with some C knowledge, (obviously using Atmel AVRs to learn with.)

This book was clearly written and published very quickly, without a lot of effort and without much proofing. Many sections in this book are unclear and awkwardly worded. There are several blatant errors that are all results of the book not being proofed before publishing. The authors/publishers also offer classroom PowerPoint slides to colleges who use this book. These slides are riddled with errors, typos, and mistakes.

This could have been a very good book, even a five star book. All of the information that you need to know/learn is there. It is unfortunate that the authors didn't spend a little more time in writing and proofing the book before publishing it.

Ballerina: A Step-by-Step Guide to Ballet - A true delight from book to DVD!!

I have researched and purchased various ballet books and videos for my daughter (7 yo beginner) and myself (a dance teacher). This one is the product inspiring and helpful for both of us. The selection of the material, quality/artistry of the photographs and accompanying DVD are all superb - by far the most beautiful product I have seen. It is simply delightful!

My daughter loved to read through each page along with studying the photos - she gets more knowledge out of the book than from her classroom.

It is worth mentioning .. my 7 year old even pointed out that the barre works on DVD were shoot by 2 models facing the opposite sides, so a complete view of the movement (front-back view or left-right view) can be seen clearly (whereas if this was seen on other videos, there are typically 2 or more groups of dancers scattered in a classroom - kind of distracting).

Great Book but a Note of Warning

The book is very informative and the photos are lovely as DK photos usually are. You can learn alot of the positions and terms from this book with photos to guide you. However, I want to warn those like me who know virtually nothing about ballet that this book and dvd contain pointe excercises. After some research I found that people are generally not ready for pointe until about 2-3 (maybe even never)years after starting ballet and working very hard with a trained instructor very regularly. They do not allow children younger than 10-11 to begin it as it can be very damaging to the developing bones of a child this age range. I suggest you take the time to research pointe and pointe readiness before allowing your little girl to get her hopes up as I did.

Lovely photos and helpful DVD

My two daughters take ballet and enjoyed reading this book together. It has great photos and teaches the technical terms in an easy to comprehend manner. My younger daughter really took to this book and uses it as a fun reference. The included DVD is very helpful and it's a good deal to receive it included with the book. My daughters dance together with the DVD. Highly recommended. We also enjoy the Element DVD (we love Elise Gulan), the Illustrated Book of Ballet Stories (with CD), the Ballet Friends book series, and the Ballet for Beginners DVD.
