good text on mathematical statistics

Paul Hoel taught statistics at UCLA for many years. This book was one of the best introductions to mathematical statistics for a first year graduate course. It was used as a text for that purpose at UCLA and many other statistics departments across the country. Several editions of the book were published to keep it up to date. Currently it is a little dated and there are many advances particularly in the area of resampling methods and other computer-intensive statistical procedures that are not covered.

I think it is somewhat comparable to the combination of Erich Lehmann's books on hypothesis testing and the theory of estimation.

Statistical theory and application

I used the fourth edition in a college course and found it to be well written and very understandable (the fourth edition was pre-calculator and had math tables in the back). The book assumed only an elementary calculus background and so was not rigorous in proving every theorem introduced, but was pretty good in showing the derivation of commonly used results and formulas.

I particularly liked the problem sets which were a mix of theoretical and applied exercises (with answers to the odd numbers), and NOT a long list of statements to be proven.

The emphasis was on theory, but statistical theory developed from attempts to solve real life problems and this book recognized that and considered applications of that theory throughout.

I knew this book's name from Bibiography for an Encyclopeadia Britannica (1993 edition) article Statistics. I have not read the book yet. I gave it a neutral rating (3 stars) since I assume the book at least is not a poor one. (Very likely it deserv a 4 or 5 star rating after I read it).

Just finished reading this book & all I can say is wow! This author went through hell and back,but she never gave up. She was abused mentally, physically and emotionally. I like how she showed the good the bad and the ugly in her situation. I think that's what made her story believable and relatable, the fact that she didn't "sugarcoat " or try to make herself look like an "innocent Angel" She kept it 100! I think this book will help someone who is in an abusive relationship to "wake up " the fact that the author was able to look back and admit & identify her mistakes shows that she has learned from her experience. No matter how bad your situation is, if you learn from it then it was helpful in making you a better person.

I am not a big reader and it normally takes me a long time to read a book but this book was so interesting that I couldn't put it down from the first page to the last page it kept me intrigued and wanted to know more about the person who went through this tragic period in their life. I feel that this is a must-read for young girls today. It needs to be on every highschool bookshelf in school libraries throughout Kansas City. I feel that this writer is an excellent writer and she told her story very well it was an easy book to read I understood everything that was written and everything that she was going through I understood the timeline the content of the story,great job. I hope other people read this book and I hope that they get the message that the writer was trying to put out there and I also hope that it becomes a play and hit the Big Time movie theaters cuz I would be one movie that I would love to go see

This was a great book. Very talented writer. I found this book to be very intiguing. It hits so close to home for some. And so many are able to relate. I absolutely loved the strength and endurance of the writer. She is certainly a survivor. And I commend her for her ability to continue to fight, not just physically. But, Emotionally , mentally and spiritually. You my dear, are an inspiration to many. Amazing book!

WARNING TO COLLEGE STUDENTS

Great book! Sorry this is not a review for people who want to know about the contents but I just have a warning of all who wants to buy this product. STOP NOW DON'T CLICK THE BUY BUTTON. Go do yourself a favor and get the bound version of this book or even buy it from a friend. I bought this version thinking I could fit it inside a 2" binder no problem and use it through the school year. NOPE was I wrong... The pages are the same quality of any you would find in any math text book, flimsayyyyy.. And since it is hole punched it rips easily when you are trying to flip through the pages at lightning speed. So either you be very careful and slow while flipping through this book or you go do yourself a world of good by buying the bound version. Getting it bound by other stores and services will cost you about 50-150 ish dollars. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ money out the window. The price of the other one is 50 dollars more. PLEAse PLEASE PlEasE go buy that one and you won't have to deal with the troubles I had to go through.

SUNDAY TOLLEFSON is an author, professional keynote speaker, coach, and leading authority on Panhellenic sorority recruitment prep for prospective members. She is the author of RUSH RIGHT: Reveal Your Best YOU During Sorority Recruitment. Having been a sorority member and alumna advisor, Ms. Tollefson was inspired to write the book after noticing an absence of education and advice for young women who were considering joining sororities. She knew that providing quality advice and information could dramatically improve their experiences during and results from sorority recruitment. After her college years, Tollefson served in advisory positions within her Panhellenic sorority and individual contributor roles within Fortune 500 companies including GE, Intel, and Morgan Stanley. Similar to sororities, those companies excelled in both training their employees and recruiting the best talent from the marketplace. Ms. Tollefson brings together the pertinent information and lessons from all these organizations with the SureSister PETAL System™. Wish I had this during recruitment!!

This is a great book! The tips and advice in Rush Right would have helped me out so much during recruitment. Even now preparing for jobs, I find myself referring to Rush Right in how to put my best foot forward in interviews! This is a great book and ALL potential new members should consider reading it and practicing for recruitment!

Recommend for all young college bound women!

Wonderful book full of helpful information and tips! Not only is it applicable for young women interested in joining sororities, but many of the tips can be used for any professional endeavor. Tips on how to present one’s self best, listening skills, preparation and more; all important life skills that will benefit young women whether they join a sorority or not. For those sorority bound the information on the process and how to be a proactive candidate and put your best self forward in invaluable. The author clearly knows what she is talking about, and the writing is smart and friendly. I recommend this book to any young women thinking of college, as well as their parents!

and the climax where the heroine faces down the bad guy was pointless and senseless

The beginning was quite strong for a romance novel but by chapter 5 it started going downhill the hero and the villain were not strong, and the climax where the heroine faces down the bad guy was pointless and senseless. The characters names as Storm and Flame seemed like names from an adults only movie. No one would have had those names in that time period.
