Excellent introduction

The book is a modern introduction to the whole field of 'intelligent systems' (IS) which is broadly what we used to call AI before the term fell out of favour. It is very much an introduction "suitable for a first course in IS...anywhere from the junior level undergraduate to first year graduate level". It is 700+ pages of excellence. It covers a wide range of subjects, is grounded in practical use of freely available tools (Protege, CLIPS, Soar, etc.,) and is written by someone who clearly understands what it is like to be unfamiliar with the subject and the kind of questions that beginners ask. It doesn't drown you with algebra, but uses enough to illustrate the points being made. It concentrates almost more on worked examples of CSPs, rule sets, blackboards, decision trees, fuzzy logic and all kinds of other stuff than it does on maths. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a comprehensive and highly readable introductory overview of IS.

There are so many helpful hints and information that by the end of the week I had mastered the technique and produced gorgeous silk scarves. I sold the majority of them at an Art show the next week. About the Author
Gerald Durrell was born in Jamshedpur, India, in 1925. He returned to England in 1928 before settling on the island of Corfu with his family. In 1945 he joined the staff of Whipsnade Park as a student keeper, and in 1947 he led his first animal-collecting expedition to the Cameroons. He later undertook numerous further expeditions, visiting Paraguay, Argentina, Sierra Leone, Mexico, Mauritius, Assam and Madagascar. His first television programme, Two in the Bush¸ which documented his travels to New Zealand, Australia and Malaya was made in 1962; he went on to make seventy programmes about his trips around the world. In 1959 he founded the Jersey Zoological Park, and in 1964 he founded the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. He was awarded the OBE in 1982. Encouraged to write about his life's work by his brother, Durrell published his first book, The Overloaded Ark, in 1953. It soon became a bestseller and he went on to write thirty-six other titles, including My Family and Other Animals, The Bafut Beagles, Encounters with Animals, The Drunken Forest, A Zoo in My Luggage, The Whispering Land, Menagerie Manor, The Amateur Naturalist and The Aye-Aye and I. Gerald Durrell died in 1995.

I read the Trilogy in one stride

All in all, this trilogy is a pretty collection of must read books. However, I regret reading it in a stride.

I heard about 'My family and other animals' a few times before, but finaly took it to read upon an acquaintance' recommendation. I took a trilogy because it paid off (t was a good one book price for three) and I like having books of a collection neatly sticking together.
It is also a good edition - I haven't got a complaint about it.

About the content.
As said, 'My family and other animals' is a must-read. The author poured his soul on the pages, his enthusiasm is tangible and contagious. There's also a faint child-like feel to the first book, to the stories about first encounters with earthly creatures and the family's reactions to young Gerald's growing "managerie".
The stories are hillarious, made me want to learn more about some of the animals (I knew only a few of them, like dogs and a donkey, but I had to search the web for geckos, spiders and various beetles).

The three books in the Corfu Trilogy were not written consequently, and it shows. While the language improved visibly, the style changed as well. Not necessarily in a bad sense (some of the best, the most funny stories are in the third book), but it's visible. The style difference is what prevented me from giving the Trilogy five stars.

What bothered me personally was reading the same chronology three times repeated. The stories are different each time, but to me it was a little boring knowing Gerry was through growing up once or twice already. So, I recommend reading the Trilogy in three chunks, with at least a few months in-between. Start with 'My family and other animals'.

This is the first time I have read Gerald Durell, and it was a magnificent read! Because of his unusual upbringing, he uses words that are highly descriptive and makes you 'see' the things he describes. I was totally lost in the richness of his writing, and highly recommend that you just read the trilogy in as much of one sitting as you can because it is like having a lavish meal from entree to dessert all in one....

Delightful!

I've just received a Kindle WiFi for a Christmas present. One of the first ebooks I purchased was this much loved and warmly remembered book about Gerald Durrell's childhood in Corfu.

I'm delighted to have a good copy again as my old ones are getting very dog eared now.

I can highly recommend these stories and can't imagine anyone who would not enjoy the gentle humour and acute observations.

Not very useful for real projects.

The textbook only covers basics. It is a book for beginners and for low level college introductory microcontroller courses. The book not very useful for real projects. The author give me an impression that he just started to learn about AVR right before starting to write this book. In this book, it is not much explanation on the hardware features; being able to connect to external memory for ATmega128. Author use for examples Atmega32. Interfaces examples no cover CAN and USB connections to AVR. No cover connection to graphics matrix displays.

I will start of by saying that out of all the text books I have come across this is by far one of the best.

I need this book for part of an engineering degree, focused on the AVR micro-controller. Coming form a programing degree I found this book very good, clear and it is filled with useful examples.
One thing i loved about the book is that it was written in a way that it can be used by people with little experience with programing, or anyone who is new to Assembly and embedded systems programing.

I loved the introductory chapters as they gave you are feel and solid back round in AVR and computing.
One more note that I found very important was the fact that as the examples got more complicated they often had both C and assembly side by side which helps give a better perspective of what you are doing.

Book used for College Assembly Course

This is the book assigned for an Assembly class I am taking.

The scope of this book is not stated on Amazon, but this book is intended for college students learning Assembly with some C knowledge, (obviously using Atmel AVRs to learn with.)

This book was clearly written and published very quickly, without a lot of effort and without much proofing. Many sections in this book are unclear and awkwardly worded. There are several blatant errors that are all results of the book not being proofed before publishing. The authors/publishers also offer classroom PowerPoint slides to colleges who use this book. These slides are riddled with errors, typos, and mistakes.

This could have been a very good book, even a five star book. All of the information that you need to know/learn is there. It is unfortunate that the authors didn't spend a little more time in writing and proofing the book before publishing it.

Ballerina: A Step-by-Step Guide to Ballet - A true delight from book to DVD!!

I have researched and purchased various ballet books and videos for my daughter (7 yo beginner) and myself (a dance teacher). This one is the product inspiring and helpful for both of us. The selection of the material, quality/artistry of the photographs and accompanying DVD are all superb - by far the most beautiful product I have seen. It is simply delightful!

My daughter loved to read through each page along with studying the photos - she gets more knowledge out of the book than from her classroom.

It is worth mentioning .. my 7 year old even pointed out that the barre works on DVD were shoot by 2 models facing the opposite sides, so a complete view of the movement (front-back view or left-right view) can be seen clearly (whereas if this was seen on other videos, there are typically 2 or more groups of dancers scattered in a classroom - kind of distracting).

Congratulations to the producer and the production team!!

Great Book but a Note of Warning

The book is very informative and the photos are lovely as DK photos usually are. You can learn alot of the positions and terms from this book with photos to guide you. However, I want to warn those like me who know virtually nothing about ballet that this book and dvd contain pointe excercises. After some research I found that people are generally not ready for pointe until about 2-3 (maybe even never)years after starting ballet and working very hard with a trained instructor very regularly. They do not allow children younger than 10-11 to begin it as it can be very damaging to the developing bones of a child this age range. I suggest you take the time to research pointe and pointe readiness before allowing your little girl to get her hopes up as I did.

Lovely photos and helpful DVD

My two daughters take ballet and enjoyed reading this book together. It has great photos and teaches the technical terms in an easy to comprehend manner. My younger daughter really took to this book and uses it as a fun reference. The included DVD is very helpful and it's a good deal to receive it included with the book. My daughters dance together with the DVD. Highly recommended. We also enjoy the Element DVD (we love Elise Gulan), the Illustrated Book of Ballet Stories (with CD), the Ballet Friends book series, and the Ballet for Beginners DVD.
