It is crazy that this book should be out of print. What are publishers thinking of? The verses are a delight, though they become increasingly tragic as the book progresses - "The Sea Bell" is a devastating account of something like clinical depression, yet like many of the rest it has a strange beauty. On the surface much is easy-to-read verse, but often has subtle allusions to deep matters. Many links with "The Lord of the Rings" for those who know where to look, and, I think, an unusually personal account of Tolkien's own struggles to find beauty, wonder and enchantment in the bleak modern world - it is only coincidence that "The Sea Bell" is the only one of his major works for publication written in the first person?

A must-read. A rich and practical book.

This book is a must-read for anyone looking to deepen their quest for self-knowledge. I have never encountered a book that depicts the journey of a human being from shadow to light with such clarity. This content is extremely pragmatic and contains rich lessons for people from all walks of life. I've enjoyed reading through the book from cover to cover once, and now going back to read a chapter at a time to really absorb the teachings. Since the book covers a large scope of topics and different areas of life, it's been helpful for me to pick and choose sections based on my current reality. This has ranged from solidifying a consistent spiritual practice in the mornings to understanding the role of money in my life, from overcoming my own selfishness to navigating the intricacies of love, intimacy, sexuality etc. If every politician, teacher, business executive, parent etc read this book, we'd be much better off as a whole!

About the Author
Krishna G. Palepu is the Ross Graham Walker Professor of Business Administration and Senior Associate Dean for International Development at the Harvard Business School, Harvard University. Prior to assuming his current administrative position, Professor Palepu held other positions at the school, including Senior Associate Dean, Director of Research, and Chair, Accounting and Control Unit. Professor Palepu's current research and teaching activities focus on strategy and governance. In the area of strategy, his recent focus has been on the globalization of emerging markets. In the area of corporate governance, Professor Palepu's work focuses on how to make corporate boards more effective, and on improving corporate disclosure. Professor Palepu teaches these topics in several HBS programs aimed at members of corporate boards: "How to make corporate boards more effective, "Audit Committees in the new era of governance, "Compensation Committees: Preparing the challenges ahead." Professor Palepu has done extensive research on mergers and acquisitions and corporate disclosure. Based on this work, he coauthored the book, Business Analysis and Valuation: Text and Cases, which won the American Accounting Association's Wildman Award for its impact on management practice, as well as the Notable Contribution to the Accounting Literature Award for its impact on academic research. This book, translated into Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish, is widely used in leading MBA programs all over the world. It is accompanied by a business analysis and valuation software model published by the Harvard Business School Publishing Company. Professor Palepu has a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an Honorary Doctorate from the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration.

Victor L. Bernard, who passed away November 14, 1995, was Director of the Paton Accounting Center at the University of Michigan and Director of Research for the American Accounting Association.

Paul M. Healy is James R. Williston Professor of Business Administration, and Unit Head, Accounting and Management, at Harvard Business School, Harvard University. Professor Healy joined Harvard Business School as a Professor of Business Administration in 1997. Professor Healy received his B.C.A. Honors (1st Class) in Accounting and Finance from Victoria University, New Zealand in 1977, his M.S. in Economics from the University of Rochester in 1981, his Ph.D. in Business from the University of Rochester in 1983, and is a New Zealand CPA. In New Zealand, Professor Healy worked for Arthur Young and ICI. Prior to joining Harvard, Professor Healy spent fourteen years on the faculty at the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management, where he received awards for teaching excellence in 1991, 1992, and 1997. He is the co-author of one of the leading financial analysis textbooks, Business Analysis & Valuation. In 1993-94 he served as Deputy Dean at the Sloan School, and in 1994-95 he visited London Business School and Harvard Business School. Professor Healy's research includes studies of the role and performance of financial analysts, how firms' disclosure strategies affect their costs of capital, the performance of merging firms after mergers, and managers' financial reporting decisions. His work has been published in The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Financial Economics. Useful if cumbersome

This review applies to the edition WITH CASES. This isn't recommended for anyone who is just starting out with choosing investments. Beginners might be better off with a more general overview of financial statement analysis (FSA) like Higgins' "Analysis of Financial Statements" or Fraser and Omriston's "Understanding Financial Statements".
This was one of two textbooks used in a financial statement analysis course I took for my MBA. Most chapters are down-to-earth and as a whole the book is well-written.
The other text we used was Penman's "Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation" which was also a great resource as far as gaining a basic understanding of the mechanics of financial statements and how to build a valuation model.
I contrast the two books because while Penman provides a run-down of several different models analysts can use (and does a good job of arguing for the Residual Income Model of valuation model as being the best), Palepu delves into the implications of companies' choices of accounting methods and provides more insight into what different kinds of businesses should look like in terms of their financial statements.
The cases at the end of each chapter add a lot of value to the text because they get students to focus on the specific issues detailed in each chapter. By picking apart different companies' financial statements we learned to use financial statements to assess the success or failure of companies' efforts to carry out their business strategies.

Great book but could have been improved

A very good book but the book came up short for not mentioning the case of Computer Associates former executives for jiggering their financial statements to push up stock prices and paying themselves over $1.1 billion in stock options which Computer Associates later filed a lawsuit against these executives, asking for those shares back or the case of Satyam where the author of the book was sitting on the board of Satyam but failed to practice/implement the merit of transparent corporate governance that he has been preaching at Harvard Business School.

About the Author
Professor Gaetano Cipolla is Professor Emeritus from St. John's University. He is regarded as the leading scholar for Sicilian language and culture in the US. He is president and editor of Arba Sicula, and he is the principal editor of Legas in New York. He has written extensively on Sicilian culture. His Siciliana: Studies on the Sicilian Ethos, contains some of his most important essays. He is also the leading translator of Sicilian poetry into English, with more than a dozen volume to his credit.

Great book!!

This is the first really well organized sicilian language textbook i've seen. i looked through the first couple chapters and im impressed. if you have jk bonner's sicilian grammar book this is much different and more appealing i think. its organized much like other language text i've seen for spanish or french. of course im a little partial to my own parrati but the one used is good. i think the author was really compelled to pick one and stick with it in order to not make the work too confusing... anyways great book so far! grazzii Gaetano Cipolla!!

Truly excellent and innovative

I am very impressed with the way this book is organized. Over all, an incredibly thorough presentation of Sicilian. I wish other language texts followed the pacing and format of this one. The author strikes an innovative balance that most miss: starts basic but progresses quickly while providing enough vocab translation and grammar explanation; has a great balance of text, photos and space so it's not as stuffy as some overly text-heavy books; nor does it spend toooo much time on cheesy illustrations or too much preschool-type vocabulary as many others do (the dog is big. the cat is little, etc.). Glossy pages and color photos make it very readable and engaging, and the intermediate and very advanced texts in the mid and later portion of the book represent a very diverse selection-poetry, historical, geographical, etc. The exercises are useful w/o being too repetitive, and the CD-though a bit tiresome at times simply b/c it includes recitations of so many exercises and answers-is very helpful. Highly highly recommended.

This is the best book I have ever found on learning Sicilian! My father didn't speak Sicilian too much at home because he wanted us to assimilate and because my mother is from England. But this takes me back to my other half's roots to my remaining family there.

An eye-opener. Even after all the security laws/regulations passed during/after the Great Depression, there is still an insiders club that exists within the Stock Exchanges. And that "club" continues to fleece the average retail investor. The Exchange rationalizes the "club" as necessary to stabilize market prices. When in reality, the "club" introduces instability for its own gain. Corporate insiders have to disclose stock transactions. Why not the market makers? Even though the book is thirty-years old, it still rings true today. The club still exists and the government still has done relatively little to reign in the abuses of the insiders "club."

"Thrive: Life-Giving Disciplines for a Chaotic World" is a beautiful resource that provides a healing balm for our hurried souls.

The 21st-century culture promotes a couple of false assumptions. First, faster is better and more productive. Second, that 'newer' is always better. Newer technology beats older technology. Newer medical resources beat treatments from decades past. But in reality, timeless truths still exist, and we need to pay attention to ancient wisdom.

In Thrive, Markene Meyer helps us reintegrate some timeless truths and ancient wisdom by teaching, guiding, and providing practice of spiritual disciplines from early Christianity. Each week, Meyer provides time for practice and includes contemplative questions regarding our practice experiences. I found each unit's teaching, time of practice, and questions for contemplation to provide deep soul-rest for myself and others weary of attempting to engage God with formulas or practices that have grown too routine, too laborious, or no longer fit well in a current season of life.

Markene Meyer also encourages us to consider our unique, divine-designs in the culmination of Thrive in order to create a rule of life. Our personalized "Rule" provides creative ways and practices that resonate with each of us to engage God as Christ-followers in healing ways that are life-giving. A Fresh Take on Spiritual Disciplines
What a refreshing and inspiring book! The author paints a clear picture to finding a "more life-giving way," a way to find Jesus amidst the chaos of modern life. I loved the structure of this book and the whole idea behind a developing a "rule of life.” The book walks the reader through developing a personal “rule of life,” an ancient practice that has a way of centering modern readers. I also loved the focus on getting into God’s rhythm for our life, something badly needed in today’s harried culture. I found the book challenging and thought-provoking. If you’re looking for inspiration, a book to help breathe new life into your spiritual life, you’ll like Thrive.
