About the Author
Dr. Dennis P. Nolan has had a long career devoted to risk engineering, fire protection engineering, loss prevention engineering and systems safety engineering. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Business Administration from Berne University, Master of Science degree in Systems Management from Florida Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. He is a U.S. registered professional engineer in fire protection engineering in the state of California.

He is currently on the Executive Management staff of Saudi Aramco, located in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, as a Loss Prevention Consultant/Chief Fire Prevention Engineer. He covers some of the largest oil and gas facilities in the world. The magnitude of the risks, worldwide sensitivity, and foreign location make this one the highly critical fire risk operations in the world. He has also been associated with Boeing, Lockheed, Marathon Oil Company, and Occidental Petroleum Corporation in various fire protection engineering, risk analysis, and safety roles in several locations in the United States and overseas. As part of his career, he has examined oil production, refining, and marketing facilities under severe conditions and in various unique worldwide locations, including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and North and South America. His activity in the aerospace field has included engineering support for the NASA Space Shuttle launch facilities at Kennedy Space Center (and for those undertaken at Vandenburg Air Force Base, California) and “classified” national defense systems.

Dr. Nolan has received numerous safety awards and is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, He is the author of many technical papers and professional articles in various international fire safety publications. He has written four other books, Handbook of Fire and Explosion Protection Engineering Principles for Oil, Gas, Chemical and Related Facilities (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Editions), Fire Fighting Pumping Systems at Industrial Facilities (1st & 2nd Editions), Encyclopedia of Fire Protection (1st & 2nd Editions), and Loss Prevention and Safety Control Terms and Definitions. Dr. Nolan has also been listed for many years in “Who’s Who in California”, Who’s Who in the West”, Who’s Who in the World” and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering” publications. Dr Iain J. Clark, (London, UK), is Head of Foreign Exchange Quantitative Analysis at Dresdner Kleinwort in London, where he set up and runs the team responsible for developing pricing libraries for the front office. Previously, he was Director of the Quantitative Research Group in Lehman Brothers, Fixed Income Quantitative Analyst at BNP Paribas and has also worked in FX Commodities Derivatives research at JP Morgan. He holds an MSc in Mathematics from the University of Edinburgh, and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Queensland, Australia. Dr Clark is a regular speaker at key finance events, and has presented at London Imperial College, The Bachelier Society Annual Conference, London Imperial College, world business Strategies annual Conference, Risk events, Marcus Evans events and many more.

A real practioner's book

I traded BRLUSD options for 5 years, and Iain's book is the only book that covers all the different aspects of trading and modelling FX options:
Different delta conventions
Market strangles, and how to fit your interpolating function to the traded strikes
Realistic interpolations for volatility surface construction
Local volatility in FX
Local Stochastic Volatility Models
Longdated FX Options
Also covered are the different issues and approaches of implementing the models, like Monte Carlo and PDEs; and a good discussion of barrier bending and exotics.
The focus is on presenting the methods and formulas, not proving theorems; even so, traders should not treat it as only a formula depository, there's real depth behind it.
Highly recommended for anyone trading or modelling FX options.

Relevant and insightful for modelling FX options

Once you start going through the book - very quickly you will realize that it is extremely practical and comes for a person who has been a significant participant of the market with many years of experience. This is important since most texts are theoretical and and less insightful

Some of the most useful topics are:
Concept of many deltas and decent treatment of ATM and Delta conventions
Correctness of FX vol surface construction in the light of 1-vol Butterfly convention
Most relevant fitting methods

good details about models and practical mention of the LSV model -
entire section on practical aspects of the numerical methods
Really like the comparison with Heat equation.

Barrier options have been treated very well. I was able to do a comparative analysis of different skew based models - LV, SV LSV through Moustache graphs for OneTouch and DNTs.

Since Iain was heading desk activities, I would have really liked for him to also cover a few more things like:

- practical aspects of curve building given FX market is so convoluted with conventions - which ccys use LIBOR/OIS curve and which ones use FX Forward implied curves
- How is the model used practically for hedging activities - a little more intuition besides the math
- FX Volatility products in the light of FX models - calibrating SV model parameters to variance swaps.

overall a great book and definitely recommend reading it for desk activities

One of the best quant books around

Although I've only managed to read about the first 4 chapters...based on my reading, I can already recommend this very highly.

Thoughtful, clear and rigorous, this book offers an in depth, unified treatment of fx options pricing. It will be a great reference for a quant and also potential traders. Not only does ian bridge the gap about volatility surface, but how one applies these models to the fx. I would recommend having read a prior book in stochastic calculus prior to coming to this book....Although you don't really need an indepth knowledge about stochastic calculus prior to reading this book. Say, a book by ubbo wiersema brownian motion calculus should do the trick or perhaps even shreve (i've read ubbo's book completely and have only read about 7-8 chapters in shreve).

apart from that...a course in numerical linear algebra would also help. although most of the numerical stuff in this book is very self-contained. in short...buy it...The mathematical tootls you will learn from this book can very well be applied in other areas of options pricing.

A great balance between introductory material and specific algorithms for an engineer

This a great introduction to some of the more cutting edge techniques in recommender systems. It starts with basic structure of various types of recommender systems and then layers in more sophistication. Bayesian methods get a extensive treatment here and explore/exploit techniques are front and center (versus an afterthought in some books and research papers). The treatment of Multi-objective Optimization in recommender systems was unique for a book and very welcome since most real world problems have multiple tradeoffs. If you are an engineer with some statistics knowledge and some patience, you'll find this rewarding.

Awesome, fast-paced series starter with Templar Knights, magic, and vamps.

Whenever I got word that Debra Dunbar was writing an entirely new series outside of the Imp world, I knew that whatever it was, it would knock my socks off. Dunbar has a way with words, pardon the pun, and the characters she creates are always multi-dimensional, tough but not infallibly so, and the worlds she creates for these characters to inhabit are subtle, yet just as rich as the characters. Aside from all of the above, the biggest draw for me was the fact that this new series would have a Templar as the main character. Yes, you heard right: a mere human. Albeit a human with some magic, but human nonetheless.

In Dead Rising, readers are introduced to Solaria Angelique Ainsworth, a woman descended from centuries of Templar Knights. Up until this point, all of her family members, past and present, have accepted their fate and taken the Oath and its responsibilities without question. The sole exception being Aria herself. Unable to dedicate herself to knighthood for fear of losing who she is, she relocates to Baltimore in hopes of separating herself from her mother's constant Oath nagging, and making a life that's purely her own. Her need to have her own identity is strong, and as such, she's the black sheep of the Ainsworth clan.

Even without taking the Oath, Aria's need to protect and her need to guide the "Pilgrim's on the Path" is just as strong as her need to be recognized as a person and not just a Knight. There's quite a lot of internal struggling within Aria, and it will be interesting to see if she ever succumbs to both her family and the small part inside of her that sees the benefits of becoming a true Templar Knight.

Aside from Templars, Dead Rising also centers around vampires. The Knights and the vampires have a very uneasy truce that dates back centuries; a truce that must be navigated with trepidation. Dunbar's vampires, at their cores, are the monsters we expect when we hear "vampire". Although there are a few sexy ones thrown in for good measure (Hello, Dario :) ). Aria finds herself embroiled in vampire politics, much to her dismay, after being approached by said sexy vampire to decode a strange symbol that's been popping up in various places. With a whole lot of reluctance, Aria works side by side with the unpredictable clan in hopes of preventing death and destruction that ties back to a murder dating 40 years ago.

Dead Rising, in my estimation, is Dunbar's most ambitious urban fantasy to date. There aren't many mainstream UF series that center around Templars, and that element is really what made this story stand out for me. It also has the trademark humor and wit that I expect whenever I read anything by Debra, yet the feel and the tone is definitely more mature than her other series. Not that I'm comparing the two, mind you. Apples and oranges. There's a hint of romance, one that's fraught with danger, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how that's going to play out in the future.

Bottom line -- fantastic, fast-paced series starter with murder, magic, vampires, and a whole lot of action. I absolutely recommend Dead Rising and can only hope it's going to be another long-running series. Fingers crossed that it is :)

Couldn't put it down!

I'm a huge fan of Debra Dunbar's writing. I fell in love with her Imp series and have enjoyed everything of hers that I've read so far. I'm happy to say that this book did not disappoint! I'm going to skip the summary, since several others have already done a great job at giving you a general overlook of the book. But I will say that I truly enjoyed this novel, and I'm very glad I'd set aside half the day to read it (took about 5-6 hours, so not a terribly long book) because I couldn't put it down. It's a little different writing style than her other books, but I think any true fan of fantasy or paranormal will enjoy it. You can tell that this is the first of a series, as there is a lot of world building and character introduction, and I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone better. It's told from the main character's pov, Aria, who is a Templar. I don't know much about Templars, so it was fun getting to know a bit about them. There def are some moral issues brought up that I found to be pretty interesting, and I'm interested to see how those issues play out in the series. I also really liked the main male lead, Dario. He is very complicated, and is not all "good", which I actually like, since I think it's more realistic. There is definitely some sexual tension between the main girl and him, and I'm reeeeeally hoping we'll see something sexy and juicy from them down the road lol. For those that don't like that sort of thing, however, just know that their aren't any love scenes in this book. I didn't see too much cursing either, but, to be honest, I don't always notice cursing. There are some proofing errors that kinda jarred me for a moment when I came across them, but all in all they didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book. The story is interesting and well done, with like able (or at least understood) "bad guys", and interesting main characters. I'm really looking forward to many more in this series, and am bummed the next one isn't out for 2 more months lol. If it was out right now then I guarantee I'd be reading it and likely staying up all night to finish it lol! All in all, another wonderful book DD! Looking forward to (hopefully!) many more books about Aria to come!

Amazing & officially on my auto-buy list

A quick historical reminder:
The Knights Templar is a religious order that can trace their origins to the First Crusades. They are essentially an elite force with two centuries worth of bloody history. I only mention this because the heroine in this story & her family have been & continue to be Knights Templar. Therefore the history is touched on throughout the story.

Characters:
Solaria "Aria" Ainsworth: Aria relocated to Baltimore after bucking a long standing family tradition. Aria comes from a long line of Templar knights (Knights Templar). She was born to be a knight, however Aria refuses to take the oath. As a result she's a highly trained solider with a history major (specialty middle ages/religious studies) with no job experience & limited social skills...working as a barista.
Dario: Dario is second in command (what amounts to lieutenant) in the Baltimore vampire clan.
Plot:
The Mistress of the local vampire balaj (clan) Leonora request the gift of knowledge (investigate) from Aria. Not everything goes as planned for any of the parties involved being Aria is not a sworn knight, as such her behavior is not limited by The knight's responsibilities or oaths.
Romance:
None.
Dario & Aria have an ongoing "flirtatious" acquaintance. Well, what one may see as provocative advances another may think of as harassment.
Overall Thoughts:
No editing issues. The writing felt more mature than her imp series. The pacing was quick & action filled. I immediately became immersed in the world, plot & characters. I devoured this book in one sitting. The story wrapped up nicely, no cliffhangers or loose threads.
Favorite part of this book:
Aria's character in particular had amazing depth. IMO the templar knight's history along with Aria's facetious humor helped make her multidimensional. Dario & Aria's dialogue was also really entertaining.

What a great book! My husband and I were searching for a book regarding prayer petitions but could find none until we came across Mr. Savelle's book. Unlike others who were very vague in explaining what an actual prayer petition is, Mr. Savelle went above and beyond. Both my husband and I finished the book in about a week and both walked away with a through understanding of not only what a prayer of petition is, but how to actually prepare one's self on how to write one. I think it's sad that hardly anyone teaches this highly important spiritual concept. Thank-you Mr. Savelle.

very good book Jerry has done the Christian world a favor by writing this book..Like everything concerning faith though, it has to be applied. The gift of faith doesn't come about by reading about faith but by acting on your faith and that will always be a challenge because the closer you get to God's truth the more more the devil will try and rob you of it. Like Smith Wigglesworth says, when that happens you have to trust in God for the strength to press on to God and resist the devil

It has been my experience that this book is a life changer. Anyone who would like to see God do wonderful things in their lives should read this book and put the prayers of petition into practice. Jerry Savelle has been praying this way for many years and the results in his life are miraculous indeed. Praise God for such a wise man. He and his daughter also have some great videos on Youtube that are great to watch as well; lots of great information.

a gem of a book

A small but valuable book, in fact a gem of a book, for everyone who is seeking - whether it be the christ within, god, infinite mind, one's infinite self, perfect happiness, success, peace - there is one way that you receive these things- and that is through a deep faith, this is the hidden secret- the power is your faith that what is unseen will become visible. It is faith that moves everything. Highly recommended for those seeking to know the power within.
