As a vulnerability researcher, Tobias has identified and helped to fix numerous security vulnerabilities. To the point

This was a great read; short and focused. While it did not have as much variety as other books, such as The Art Of Software Security Assessment, Bug Hunter's Diary had little or no fluff and was filled with valuable content.

In each chapter, the author did a great job walking through identifying the vulnerability, and explaining the thought process in a digestible, straightforward manner. The brief enumeration of possible disclosure routes was also worded well to concisely explain why a bug hunter might pursue each avenue. Lastly, it was good to see the author track the remediating patch and identify the resulting vulnerabilities.

Tobias Klein is very thorough and detailed in his discovery of vulnerabilities, but in a concise manner. He sticks right to the point and keeps on track for honing in on vulnerable code and triggering said code with the proper conditions and data.

It was also amusing to compare differences in the disclosure timelines from chapter to chapter. Independent, open source targets were patched much more quickly than their counterparts that were fostered by larger organizations. It is uncertain as to whether this was an intentional observation, but interesting none-the-less.

This is a short, fun read for anyone who is interested in vulnerability analysis and exploit development.

Exceptional

There is a wealth of knowledge being passed in this easy to follow along book. Although some of the content (i.e. the source code), might seem cryptic at first, Tobias does an excellent job of going out of his way to making it understandable. In one instance, he was breaking down some assembly code and used pseudo c code to make it more understandable, and almost as if he could see my eyes still glazing over, he simplifies even further with pseudo code that was language-neutral (basically english), and then the light bulb went on. I was amazed at what I was learning. I also liked the fact that I did not have to concern myself or be distracted from the process because I did not understand some code, and that was huge. In addition, he has a lot of great visual diagrams, side notes, links to source code and the tools used, references for further study, basically the whole shebang. Simply put, Tobias made my first journey into the world of bug hunting an exciting one. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to better their programming skills, get into computer security research or just plain understand how software works this book will get you jump started and excited!

A read of this book may change your view of computer software forever. The real world security holes that it discusses were found in extremely popular software on a variety of different platforms and clearly represent only a few samples of such holes that are common across most software.

While a fairly advanced level of programming knowledge both with high level languages such as C++ and also with low level assembly language is required to be able to fully understand just exactly how everything described in the book works, it isn't necessary to have that in depth knowledge in order to gain some benefit. Since the purpose of each code change is described in detail in the book those without such an in depth programming knowledge can simply take the author's word for it that a given code change will have a particular result and will still be able to gain a greater understanding of just how vulnerable software can be. These are after all real vulnerabilities that the author found in common software that have since been patched. So as well as demonstrating some of the ways in which holes can be found and exploited the author also demonstrates how he has contributed to helping the owners of this software to patch some of the holes in their software and so make the software safer to use.

Perhaps the things that most stand out about software security from this book are first of all just how easily some security holes can be found by someone who has sufficient experience in "bug hunting" and second, just how small a code change is needed in many instances in order to fix these security holes.

In the front of the book the author describes the goals that he had in writing the book and the book definitely achieves those goals. One comment from the author particularly stood out as I read through the book "A brand-new MacBook: $1,149. An LED Cinema Display Monitor $899. Crashing a Mac OS X system with only 11 lines of code: priceless". As the actual code that he used had three blank lines in it and several of the other lines in his code would often be combined into one line by those using alternative formatting I'd have called that six lines of code or possibly even five lines of code rather than 11.

WHETTING APPETITE FOR MORE

This is an excellent short introduction to a complex subject, making me impatient for the author's 2014 book on the philosophy of mind. Main issues are well presented, with sophistication. Thus, the author recognizes the biases of experimental psychology resulting from too much reliance on American undergraduates as test subjects (p. 63), though he fails to apply this skepticism to the fashionable "2 systems" of reasoning dichotomy (p. 15), ignoring the important naturalistic decision making studies pioneered by Gary Klein and the impacts of professionalism on thought. The final chapter on "The Limits of Thought," however short, adds to the merits of the book by taking up seriously the likelihood of "cognitive closure" (p.103).
However there are a number of serious omissions. It remains unclear whether "thought" has to be explicit, or at least accessible to consciousness, or whether it includes essential sub-conscious processes. Depth-psychology is ignored. Related is lack of possibly significant distinctions between "thought," "pondering," "contemplation," "meditation" and "daydreaming." And creativity is not mentioned, though it is a critical modality of thought, combining subconscious incubation, deliberate mental search, and "leaps" of insight or production.
Presentation of "logic and probability theory" (the latter being in fact a branch of logic, namely modal logic) as the "best" of unbounded rationality (p. 18) is very narrow, ignoring many features of high-quality reasoning, such as field perspectives and innovativeness. This may well be related with the apparent trust of the author in the objectivity of morality (p. 100), which oversimplified "moral reasoning" (as in deontological logic) at the much too high cost of ignoring most moral philosophy and nearly all anthropology.
The book importantly takes up issues of cultural differences in thinking (but not in morality) (chapter 5), but ignores not less important individual and also gender differences.
Disturbing is the statement on lack of guidelines for generating required thoughts on the test question "why democracies tend not to wage war against other democracies" (pp. 93-4). Not only does this contradict suggestions by the author on upgrading doxastic voluntarism (pp. 96-7), but many not-too-demanding ways to stimulating thinking on the question can be suggested, such as reformulating perspectives by considering first "why are wars waged."
All these critical comments do not detract from the overall high quality of the book, which is highly recommended as an introductory and in some respect also advanced text on thought.

Needs more matter, less art.

The book was a mix of rather interesting topics and rather boring topics. "Thought" turns out to be a very nebulous term, and the book covers everything from the science behind thoughts, to the philosophical model of how thoughts might work. Often, the science is rather lacking because, as the author explains, science knows remarkably little about thought. This leaves us with multiple chapters that are just not that interesting, as topics drift from neuroscience to Descartes thoughts on thought.

The philosophy, however, was just not interesting to me. It seemed like a lot of hand waving, a lot of "maybes", and at the end of the day, I don't feel like I learned very much from those sections of the book.

Unfortunately, the Further Reading section, often a strong point of Very Short Introductions, wasn't that useful either, citing mostly studies rather than other books about the topic.

I would give this book two stars, but the kindle edition was only $5, and I might have had my expectations set unreasonably high by amazon's description of the book, hence three stars.

Eldon's powerful photographs of the escalating war in Somalia were instrumental in bringing international attention to that troubled region, and he seemed poised on the brink of an important career as a Reuters photojournalist when, in 1993, at the age of 22, he was stoned to death by a Somali mob. The posthumous The Journey Is the Destination, based on his journals, was one of the most enthusiastically received books of 1997. Eldon's youthful mastery of a fluid and vibrant collage style derived in part from the similar journals of Peter Beard, but charged with originality fully justified their publication. New's biography allows for a further selection from Eldon's 17 volumes of journals, which fittingly dominate the text both visually and thematically. Unfortunately, Eldon was in many ways a typical young man, confused, temperamental and capricious, if extraordinarily driven, and the hagiographic tone of this book is at odds with the details of his life. It is very hard to resist the temptation to make a cult of those who die young and full of promise, a temptation that New, an educational consultant in Iowa City, does not always avoid. And even granting the intrinsic interest of the journals, they are still clearly the apprentice work of someone who would have gone on to further discourses. (Oct.)Forecast: As the flipside to the young, introspective collagistes like Sabrina Ward Harrison (Brave on the Rocks, etc.), Eldon's life and work set an example of engagedness that might be tough to emulate, but should inspire younger readers. A film is in the works.

Photojournalist Eldon was 22 when he was killed by a mob in Somalia whose strong anti-American sentiments had been inflamed by the war and famine that he was documenting. It is tempting to regard Eldon as a figure whose early death is responsible for bringing him more attention than the sum of his work merited, but his capability and striking sincerity blaze from every page of New's interweaving of his photos and journal entries, including drawings, and her account of his life. Curiously, it isn't an overwhelmingly sorrowful book. Rather, it fills one with wonder at the fullness of what Eldon achieved in the short time allotted him. If his body of work is small, it constitutes a small victory, with no tragedy in it. Tragedy is supposed to inspire fear and dread, but Eldon's short life and the simple courage and curiosity with which he lived it have the power to make us brave. Will Hickman

Kathy Eldon is co-producing both a feature film about her son's life and a documentary about journalists who put their lives at risk to tell a story. She lives in Los Angeles.

For those who thought passion was a thing of the past...

Sometimes in life, we come across somebody who resembles in us everything we love, or envy, or just understand. Well, while reading "The Art of Life", a story about the travels of the young and corageous Dan Eldon, I stumbled upon all of these emotions and more. The book, a collaboration of work about Dan's travels, views, and passions, written by jennifer New and Kathy Eldon, is sure to spark a fire in each who reads it. This book is filled with more energy and spirit then I think I have ever possesed in all my years of being. Filled with colorful photographs and intelligent words, this story has been like a symphony to my weary eyes. After reading "The Journey is the Destination: The Journals of Dan Eldon" (the first book published about Dan's miraculous travels and premature demise), I thought to myslef, "nothing could possibly be more beautiful or enchanting than this." I was proven wrong as soon as my hands glided over the pages of "The Art of Life". It has been wonderful to read while sitting outside in a park on a warm afternoon, as well as inside on a rainy day when you feel all hope is lost. It has been a glorious gift, reminding me that all which stands around us is something to celebrate. My only hope is that others, even if it is one small being, find this book....it will open up a genuine desire for life in you, that is sure to last for as long as you stand beneath the blue sky which hangs above.

Wonderful Biography

This book is amazing. I first heard of Dan Eldon three years ago when I saw a special on CNN called DYING TO TELL THE STORY. That was a great program. I was very moved by it, and about a month after I saw the program I found Dan Eldon's book of journals, THE JOURNEY IS THE DESTINATION, listed on Amazon.com. I purchased that and I was fascinated by it. At the time I had just begun doing documentary still photography, and I have been keeping a journal for years - so Dan Eldon's journals were wonderful to look at and they were really eye opening for me. I found out he and I were born the same year ( 1970 ) and it was great to see art work like the journals from someone of my generation. I love the purity of the creativity in his journals. They're beautiful.
Last year I purchased the journal workbook, SOUL CATCHER, by Kathy and Amy Eldon, and I loved that also - so when I heard about this new biography I knew it would be good for me to read. I was not disappointed. It is fascinating. As I read through the chapters and began to realize how much Dan Eldon did and experienced in his life I kept thinking, "This is incredible".
The last few chapters of this biography made me cry. And I have not been moved to tears by a book since I was a child. All of the chapters were absorbing and inspiring to me. When I first saw the documentary DYING TO TELL THE STORY advertised on CNN three years ago it caught my eye initially because I saw that the program was largely about a young photojournalist in Somalia. The more I have gotten to know about Mr. Eldon's story, the courage and the explorative nature he displayed in his life, the more inspired by it I have become.
Jennifer New has done a wonderful job. The text and information is great and I also love the design of the book. It is unconventional and colorful. There are plenty of photographs of and by Dan Eldon and plenty of examples of Dan Eldon's artwork, and they are integrated into the text in an innovative way.
This book was hard to put down and it has made me look at my present life and my future in a different way. I highly recommend it.

It's a shame Kathy(his mother) never wrote this book.
By far the most imtimate and well written part of this book was the last chapter that Kathy Eldon wrote.
Obviously Jennifer New loves Dan's life like we all do but unfortuneatly she never met him and that glaringly stands out in the biography. There is way too much creative license here,the fact he is raised to almost sainthood can be squeemish at times.Jennifer's writing leaves a lot to be desired, but through the clumsy writing you can't helped but be inspired by the life of Dan Eldon.
Dan is amazing!! His photos say more about him than any bunch of words can. 'The Journey is the destination" is a must have book!!
Flip through that and I guarentee your life will be changed forever!

Idaho’s scenery is often breathtaking, and recreational opportunities include world-class skiing, kayaking, hiking, backpacking, fishing, whitewater rafting, snowmobiling and snowboarding, to name a few. Noted outdoorsman Ernest Hemingway wrote portions of For Whom the Bell Tolls in Idaho, and in 1961 put a shotgun in his mouth and committed suicide there.Idaho’s motto is Esto perpetua, which means It is forever. The principal white settlements were established by the Jesuits in the early 1840s, and nowadays Idaho’s family and religious values are heavily influenced by the Mormons, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1992, U.S. Marshals, the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents stormed the home of Randy Weaver because of firearms charges against him, and his purported affiliation with the Idaho-based white supremacy group, Aryan Nations. His wife, Vicki Weaver, and their son, Sammy, were killed in the assault, as was the family dog; when Weaver had his day in court he was acquitted of all the major charges against him, and his case is one that many Idahoans won’t let the federal government forget to this day. Even though it cost the Weavers dearly, the people of Idaho generally feel that Randy Weaver and his family were heroic for exercising their individual rights in standing up to the feds.Liberty and freedom are very important to many of Idaho’s citizens, and the state’s lawmakers rarely create laws that infringe upon individual or property rights. It is also common for residents to own firearms. When all is said and done, it doesn’t make much sense that a convicted child molester would make a conscious decision to travel hundreds of miles from the Midwest to a state where his past deeds, if discovered, were not likely to be readily accepted, a region whose conservative residents were not likely to put out the welcome mat and allow him to assimilate into their society. On the other hand, people there tend to mind their own business and are mistrustful of government in general. Joseph Edward Duncan III had no intention of making his past sex crimes known to the state or any of its citizens, so Idaho seemed like the perfect place for him to go to carry out his mission. That is exactly what he did, and in the process his alleged criminal actions would shock and horrify the state, stun the nation and ultimately destroy an entire family.Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, located in Kootenai County in the northern panhandle of the state, is an area blessed with natural beauty and a true four-season climate, with each season bringing its own unique splendor. Coeur d’Alene Lake is nearby, as is Lake Pend Oreille, and mountains add to the scenery. Early French fur traders named the lake Coeur d’Alene because they believed the local Indians were clever traders whose hearts were as sharp as a bradawl, a tool with a beveled tip used to make holes in wood for brads or screws.It wasn’t until Fort Sherman was established in 1878 that Coeur d’Alene began to grow and flourish, building its fortunes on logging, mining, fur trading and lake steamers. The town later became an important link on the transportation network linking the mining operations in the east, in Silver Valley, with the smelters that processed the mined ore. A major timber boom caused the population to increase dramatically in the early 1900s, and the small frontier town expanded into a political, business and recreational center. The expansion brought with it recognition, festivals, fairs and, later, unique restaurants and shopping malls.The crime rate also grew, but was comparatively low when viewed alongside the rest of the nation. In 2003, the FBI recorded only 203 violent crimes, and only one of those was a homicide. The violent crime rate was 5.5 per 1,000 people; the area has an estimated population of 37,262.Parents were not afraid to leave their children alone while they went into town to run errands. Children played outside without parental supervision, rode their bicycles wherever they wanted, and built forts in the nearby woods—kids there simply did all of the things that kids would normally do where they felt safe.Two years later, the story of Joseph Edward Duncan III would change the way people thought about Coeur d’Alene.Duncan arrived in Kootenai County sometime during the second week of May 2005. It is not known precisely why he stopped in the Wolf Lodge Bay area, a quiet escape for nature lovers, lightly populated and located about 8 miles east of Coeur d’Alene, just off Interstate 90. Perhaps he had merely wanted to grab a bite to eat, or to rest for a while. At some point, however, he allegedly ended up on Frontage Road and drove past a small white house with green trim, the lower portion of which appeared to have been coated with stucco on one side. This was where the Groene and McKenzie family lived.Witnesses later told the police that the Groene–McKenzie home was sometimes visited by strangers whose vehicles had broken down on the freeway—their house was the first home anyone looking for help would see after getting off Interstate 90 and onto Frontage Road. People said that the family was always happy to help a stranger in need.The house, somewhat secluded and surrounded by trees, brush and low-lying hills, was approximately 150 yards down a dirt driveway from Frontage Road and made an easy target for someone bent on wrongdoing. Many have speculated that Duncan likely saw his next victims, Shasta Groene, 8, and her brother, Dylan, 9, playing outside the house in the unseasonably warm May weather, frolicking in the yard, or walking or riding their bikes along Frontage Road, perhaps waving at a passing motorist, or motioning to passing truckers to honk the air horns on their semis. Shasta had been wearing her bathing suit on at least one of the days that weekend, and it has been suggested that it was the sight of two young children playing in their swimming suits that brought Duncan’s depraved sexual madness to the surface.It is believed that he reconnoitered the area for at least a day or two until he found the perfect vantage point where he could watch the kids and their family from a distance without being easily seen, using a night-vision apparatus during the evening hours. While the exact timeframe isn’t known, police believed that Duncan may have stalked the family for a few days after becoming comfortable with his surroundings. Perhaps he even followed them to town when they shopped or ran errands.Throughout the weekend of May 13–15, Shasta and Dylan’s mother, Brenda Kay Groene (pronounced “grow-knee”), 40, came and went, as did Brenda’s resident boyfriend, Mark McKenzie, 37, and Shasta and Dylan’s older brother, Slade, 13. On Sunday, May 15, 2005, the family drove into Coeur d’Alene to run errands, and then returned home, where they enjoyed a barbecue with some friends. The gathering went into the early evening hours before it broke up. Their friends went home, and the residents prepared to go to bed. It was the last time that anyone would remember seeing Brenda and Slade Groene and Mark McKenzie alive.The crime that Duncan was allegedly about to commit was out of character for him. His prior victims had been children, victims who were unable to defend themselves against an adult who, though standing 6-feet, 2-inches, weighed a mere 150 pounds. An Interesting Case, But Limited Details Provided

This is the first book that I have read by Gary C. King. I can only hope that this wasn't one of what is considered to be his better works as I found the writing to be only mediocre and barely able to keep my attention.

I disappointed that the background of the victims was only brushed over, and the background information on the convicted, Joseph Duncan III, was little more.

While reading this book, I reached the epilogue thinking that the writer had completed his work and rushed to publishing before we knew the resolution of this particular case. Instead I found that King placed the resolution, along with "editoral" about sex offenders, in the epilogue. This practice is quite unusual for true crime and, quite frankly, was confusing.

Overall, I would choose to read the book when there seemed to be nothing else to read. There are plenty better, but there are just as many worse.

The author of this book clearly didn't do his homework. The book seems to be hastily written and it's doubtful that he even left the comfort of his chair. Copy/paste from crime detailed websites, glaring errors and lack of history make this book an easy candidate for the trash can.

Googling some of the phrases used in the book, the reader will find that the author copied a majority of the book.

Apparently the author was too busy copy/pasting to bother to research much in depth. For had he done his homework, he would have known without a doubt that Duncan was born in Fort Bragg, NC. Instead, the author of this book cites three locations where Duncan "might" have been born. Any person with even the slightest knowledge of the Groene/MacKenzie murders knows that Duncan was in fact born at Fort Bragg.

The author could have added several interesting chapters to this book,had he done at least some small fraction of his homework. History on Duncan's involvement with Wacksman over the years as well as Crary, past girlfriends and his childhood would have added a great deal to the interest of the book.

If you're looking for a book that details the life and crimes of Duncan, don't bother with this book... save a tree, save your money and read about it on the internet.

Good for true beginners

If you're still in college and you want to know how to create readable, clear, interesting presentations then this book is for you. It's also great to give someone on your team who may be trying to cram 8pt typeface onto all their PowerPoints. The best parts of the book describe how to lay out presentation slides for easy readability. However, if you've taken a Speech class, most of the "public speaking" sections of the book will not be news to you.

Essential text for executive training programs

This handy volume works well for up and coming new managers and CEO's. Improving internal communication is the most common assignment for management consultants. Munter and Russell provide an easy to follow, step by step guide to more effective presentation. They focus on communicating ideas not impressing the audience with Power Point gimmicks. I have used it for government clients, non-profit organizations and for-profit businesses and it works equally well for all three sectors. I have taken their advice for my own graduate school teaching and my students have commented on the clarity of my slides.

Common sense guide to presentations

This is a very nice common sense guide to creating presentations. Had to use it as a text for my MBA Business communications course.
I've seen even high-flying pros who give presentations every other day coming up with presentations that are unreadable and distracting. This book gives a nice common sense approach from the scratch to change the way you create presentations. Of course, hard part is following what's said in the book given our time constraints. But definitely worth a read. I purchased the paperback edition for less than $4 and that makes it a great value.
