The Association of British Theatre Technicians produced its first guide to the design and planning of theatres in 1972. The book takes the reader through the whole process of planning and designing a theatre. It looks in detail at each area of the building: front of house, auditorium, backstage, and administrative offices. It gives specific guidance on sightlines, acoustics, stage engineering, lighting, sound and video, auditorium and stage formats. Aspects such as catering, conference and education use are also covered.

The information is supplemented by twenty-eight case studies, selected to provide examples which range in size, style and format and to cover new buildings, renovations, conversions, temporary and found space. The studies include Den Norsk, Oslo; The Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis; The Liceu, Barcelona; Les Bouffes du Nord, Paris; The RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford on Avon; and the MTC Theatre in Melbourne. All have plans and sections drawn to 1:500 scale.

The book contains around 100 high quality full colour images as well as over 60 specially drawn charts and diagrams explaining formats, relationships and technical details.

About the Author

Tim Foster is the senior partner in Tim Foster Architects. He is a council member of the Association of British Theatre Technicians, chairman of the ABTT Theatre Planning Committee and represents the UK on the OISTAT Architecture Commission. He is a board member of the Tricycle Theatre Company in London.

Andy Hayles is Managing Director of Charcoalblue Ltd, a multi-disciplinary theatre consultancy. He is a visiting lecturer to Cambridge University, Canterbury University, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, LIPA and RADA. He is a full member of the Society for Theatre Consultants, a member of the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings and a Director of the ABTT.

Peter Longman is now a Consultant to and Board member of various arts bodies, and has been involved with theatre buildings for most of his career. He ran the Arts Council's grant scheme for arts buildings from 1969-78, and was the Government's chief adviser on museums from 1984-95.

Anne Minors is director of AMPC Ltd. She is past-Chairman of the Society of Theatre Consultants; member of the Association of Lighting Designers; Council Member of the Association of British Theatre Technicians as well as a corporate member of the RIBA and an assessor for Arts Council England and Arts Council of Wales and Arts Council of Scotland.

Mark White is Director of Electronic Theatre Controls Ltd. and has been Chairman of the ABTT from 2002 until the present.

Judith Strong is the Director of aap consulting (formerly Arts & Architecture Projects). She is currently an Enabler for CABE; Chair of the Arts Advisory Committee for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames; a board member of Action for Children’s Arts; board and building committee member for the Orange Tree Theatre, Richmond; and a member of The Architecture Club.

Excellent technical resource

The book is divided into two sections: the first addresses each of a number of technical design issues:
- Preliminary planning
- Broad Principles
- Front of house
- Auditorium design
- The stage and stage machinery
- Lighting, sound and video
- Backstage provision
- Additional spaces
- Restoration, conversion and improvement of existing buildings

Each is covered with a combination of diagrams, lists, technical illustrations and photographs explaining the main points.

The second section is a series of 28 reference projects from around the world, including some very recent work like Norman Foster's Winspear Opera House, and Snohetta's opera house in Oslo. Each is documented with text, a short summary, photographs, and a plan and section through the stage and auditorium.

It's less detailed than Izenour's books, but very much more up-to-date, and a great starting resource for anyone involved in designing or modifying a theater.

Great reference but Kindle version is quite frustrating

A great reference book, However the Kindle version suffers from poor image quality on many of the diagrams (to the point of being almost illegible/useless) as well as odd and arbitrary formatting and page layout that makes it hard to relate the diagrams to the relevant section that they are meant to illustrate. Highly recommended, but make sure you buy the print version.

And Seth then challenges us, the readers, to become linchpins ourselves. To make the leap. To become artists. To do emotional work, whatever the sacrifice may be. It’s our choice, and it’s our burden. Seth won’t be there to catch us if we fall, but to become the people we need to be eventually, well, we probably wouldn’t want him to, anyway.

Repetitive and Not Realistic

This book could have been reduced to less than 50 pages. The same thing being repeated over and over, just with different scenarios, does not increase the message. Also, I disagree with the mere statements made that we are brainwashed to respond and act in specific ways. His reference to the milkshake and the big Mac in this book is pure stupid. No one in there right mind would refund or replace the meal. This word of "art" he uses is a good way to try to make you feel good. Reality, put your best foot forward, work your best, put forth your suggestions, but if you are out of compliance and obedience you will not continue to work for any company.
I appreciate his wisdom and attempt to promote one self purpose. He may be a linchpin in his endeavours. He must be, he got my business to buy this book and make it a reading project. His profit made.
I found this book none changing. More of a topic for discussion between those he git to believe in his views and those who live in reality that every one is a cog. You earn your way out if being the cog to the linchpin but being compliant and obedient. Along with presentation of ideas and suggestions.
Work hard, learn well, abide by the rules and be successful. That is business and the future of business.

Great idea, but a bit disjointed

The linchpin idea resonated, hence the reason that I bought the book. I've only read a couple of Seth's books and I now remember why...for me, he's all over the map. He "sold" me early on, but it seemed that he just kept trying to "sell" me over and over again by rehashing the same arguments over and over in a different order. I'll accept that this may be more about me than him.

Head Games

When a book is really good, I will sometimes throw it across a room and scream "I always thought that was true, but never had the (guts, ambition, intelligence) to (say, write) it myself!"
So Seth Godin has written a very provocative book. I cribbed some quotes to use later in my own writing/teaching. But at the end, I'm asking myself, "So besides write and talk, what has Seth done down here in the real world with real employees and real bosses?" He lists himself as the CEO of something, but it's not a real company... So I'm thinking Seth is like my favorite preacher: full of good words and good thoughts, but at the same time, vastly out of touch with the real world. Check out all the unemployed talent in Hollywood and feel their pain. Consider the artists selling shoes because they want to eat. Perhaps there is genius within, but perhaps the world has a limited appetite/tolerance for greatness.

Stop thinking about your idea - and build it

When you've got an idea for an app and haven't done "real development" it can be completely overwhelming to figure out where to start. Most tutorials focus on singular code samples ("how to print hello world") but don't really teach you how to truly start your own application.

Hello Web App is written around this concept - how to practically, quickly, and manageably create your first web app.

This is a fantastic guide for anyone who is not a developer and has an idea that they wish they could build. The format - "collection of things" - is incredibly flexible and gives you a fast and easy way to start "sketching" out your application without getting overwhelmed by a lot of technology.

For me, Hello Web App got me to build my first web app that has been sitting in my head for 7 years. If you have a similarly nagging concept/thought that you wish you could implement, pull the trigger and get this book.

Perfect guide for beginner programmers

In a world where all of the programming resources are written for other programmers, it's refreshing to have a guide to bridge the gap for people who are just getting into the space.

Lots of crisp screenshots, clear code examples, easy to follow narrative. Most importantly, Hello Web App emphasizes building something tangible early on so that you're motivated by your creations and keep moving forward. Recommending this book to anyone I know who has been trying to learn how to code and build web applications.

Easy to follow, practical, and overall awesome

I've done a little bit of coding, but wanted to take the next step and get into a framework that would let me build a full app. I tried a few online tutorials, but a lot of them make certain assumptions and go deep into the weeds about certain technical details that you may or may not want to know about. Hello Web app is completely unlike other tutorials I've found, and I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to start building their app right away.

If you have little or no experience with coding, you should take a few weeks to get up to speed on the basics (there are plenty of free resources to help you do this, with some suggestions in the book). However, if you've picked up a little bit of Python already, anyone should be able to easily follow along with each example. The practicality of the book was something I liked as well, and something that I find lacking in a lot of other tutorials. Most guides will show you how it works, but leave it up to you to apply the knowledge. Hello Web App is basically a line-by-line walkthrough on creating a "collection of things" (good example project since you can tweak it to fit a lot of practical applications), and if you have a little bit of basic HTML/CSS background, you can make something that looks fairly professional in just a few hours.

This is a great book for anyone looking to create an MVP for their business or project, which Tracy talks about early on. If you want to get into the nuts and bolts of Django and the MVC model of app frameworks on a technical level, this is probably not for you (although it could be a good starting point!). I really can't pick out anything negative to say, except that I would like a *little* bit more detail in some areas. But like I said, that's not the point of this book, and there are plenty of other resources for getting to that next technical level, so I can't knock points off for what's really my personal learning preference.

Great book overall, very engaging and super easy to follow along. I would 100% recommend it to someone who has an idea and wants to start building it right away. Awesome stuff!

A Down To Earth History of the World Banking System

So over the last 7 years or so all the mechanisms for power are being explained to a wider audience. The biggest is how money and power works. If you want to know so that you can make better decisions with you own life then this is a great overview of a very complex issue. It will bring even the novice reader up to speed and explain why this economy doesn't make sense.

The book is an excellent resource for those wanting to know about the history and execution of pak mei, as well as the intricacies of gung fu in general. His discussions of the various types of power used and how to exert it are found in few other texts on gung fu.

I was slightly disappointed in the fact that there are no illustrations of key stances or techniques for pak mei. Given that this is considered a "forbidden" style in some lineages, I should not be surprised. If you are a practitioner of the art, this will be useful background. If you are a martial arts researcher, this book would be a valuable addition regarding a little known internal style from the south. If you want to learn pak mei, this book will only whet your appetite.

The Single Most Important Book Of My Life

I first came to know this book when I was only 17 years old! That was 27 years ago! I had just left an alcoholic relationship with a 30 year old man (of course, at the time, the age difference didn't dawn on me). I called a friend in desperation and he said to me, "There's a book you need to read. It's called 'You Can Heal Your Life' by Louise Hay." I got the book, read it, and my life has never been the same. It lead me to one miracle after another. It was the pebble that started an avalanche in my life. I can say, with no exaggeration whatsoever, that this was the most important, the most profound book IN MY LIFE. Get it. Work it. Live it. It may be difficult at times. And you may cry a good belly cry from all the crap you release as a result of reading it. But your eyes will be opened and you WILL SEE!

Yes, You Can Heal Your Life

This book changed my life. I know you've heard that said about a lot of books and I'm sure there are other fine books out there. But this one,You Can Heal Your Life, by Louise Hay, is the motherbook from which all others evolved. I was introduced to it in 1990, 26 years ago, when I was 42. At the time I was reeling from a pessimistic cancer diagnosis, the end of my marriage, and the development of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I'm almost 69 and this is the book that showed me how to live with and through all that and more. I've given away at least a hundred of these books and this one went to my new friend, Tina, who is excited about the changes in her life she has already made. I can't recommend it highly enough.

This is my 6th month on this inner journey of healing, and I was led to read this book next. I recommend it as an essential book in everyone's home. Steve Gillon received his Ph.D. from Brown University. He has taught American cultural and political history at Brown, Yale, and Oxford. While a Professor at Yale, he was awarded the DeVane medal, a teaching award conferred each year by graduating seniors. He currently serves as Dean of the Honors College at the University of Oklahoma, and is Resident Historian at the History Channel. Dr. Gillon's books include THE DEMOCRAT'S DILEMMA: WALTER F. MONDALE AND THE LIBERAL LEGACY and "THAT'S NOT WHAT WE MEANT TO DO": REFORM AND ITS UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICA. Pretty good for a Recent American College course text

I was pleased with this book for my Recent American college course. It isn't boring or full of a lot of detail. It has a lot of primary sources and is easy to read.

I have enjoyed reading this book so far and as a history major, post-1945 American history isn't my favorite time period. But I have learned a lot just from reading this book.

LOVED what the author said about values-related topics. Yeah, I think it's slanted pretty far left but then, so am I. Conservatives would have a FIT reading this.
