David Rockefeller was born in 1915, the youngest child of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., one of the richest men in the United States, and the great patron of modern art Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. He graduated from Harvard College in the depths of the Depression, when the capitalist order, which his grandfather had helped to create, was under relentless attack. He studied at the London School of Economics and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Ph.D.
He worked briefly for New York City’s flamboyant mayor Fiorello La Guardia before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942. His service as an intelligence officer in North Africa and France brought him into contact with many of the individuals who would soon dominate European politics and gave him a unique perspective on the events and personalities that eventuated in the “twilight struggle” of the Cold War.
Rockefeller joined the Chase bank in 1946 as an assistant manager in the Foreign Department and rose through the ranks to become chairman of the board and chief executive officer. During that time, he struggled constantly to modernize and internationalize the bank’s operations, often against a conservative and risk-averse corporate culture.
During his eighty-seven years, David Rockefeller has:
• come to know world leaders ranging from Zhou Enlai to Mikhail Gorbachev, Anwar Sadat to Ariel Sharon, General Augusto Pinochet to Saddam Hussein
•worked with every U.S. president since Dwight Eisenhower, at times serving as an unofficial emissary on high-level missions
•traveled to more than one hundred countries, logging approximately five million miles while circling the globe dozens of times

This autobiography by the youngest son of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller is also a history of 20th-century America and its influence in the world order. As David Rockefeller traces his own life (he was born in 1915) with references to the personal and business dealings of his father and grandfather, this history unfolds through his eyes. Chapters on his childhood, teenage years, and relationships with his parents provide insight into his character development and lifestyle. But when he discusses his years at Harvard, the London School of Economics, and the University of Chicago, where he earned his Ph.D. in economics, Rockefeller tells of his meetings with top professors and economists such as Keynes and Schumpeter, commenting on their theories. The account of his travel experience in Nazi Germany during the mid-1930s is compelling. His marriage to Peggy, his time as an intelligence officer in World War II, and his relationships with his brothers in family conflicts, as well as his work with Chase Bank, Rockefeller Center, OPEC, and the Middle East, Latin America, and the World Trade Center, are all discussed in detail. Of particular interest is Rockefeller's epilog discussing 9/11. This very readable and thought-provoking account of an influential financier, philanthropist, and art lover will hold readers' interest. As a scion of one of America's most powerful families, a globetrotting business "statesman," a former C.E.O. of Chase Bank, and an important player in the development of downtown Manhattan, David Rockefeller is an emblematic figure of a world that no longer really exists: the world of the Wasp ascendancy. An inveterate networker among policymakers, intellectuals, and corporate leaders, he seems to have been driven by an almost naïve faith in noblesse oblige, and there's something refreshingly nineteenth-century about this entertaining memoir as well. Rockefeller's style is restrained and self-deprecating; the account of his attempts to modernize and globalize Chase makes for excellent business history, and his sketch of his complicated relationship with his brothers is especially convincing. What may be most striking, however, is Rockefeller's resolute internationalism and his commitment to institutions like the U.N.—a healthy reminder that there was a time when the Republican Party did not see "multilateralism" as a dirty word.

an interesting memoire

As a disclosure, my reason for reading David Rockefeller's Memoires may be different from yours. I had just read Ron Chernow's Titan on JDR, Sr and wanted to know more about the third generation of Rockefellers, the "Rockefeller brothers"--David, Laurance, Winthrop, Nelson, and John III. I was less interested in DR's insights on Manhattan and world affairs and politics based on his 20-25-year tenure as CEO of Chase Manhattan Bank, though the several scattered sections on Rockefeller Center I thought were fascinating because of its close association with the family.
What is amazing is that DR, who is still alive at 97 years old, has direct memories, as of 2001, of his grandfather, who was born in 1839 and had such an imprint on American history. Clearly, his father JDR, Jr, who lived to please his father, imparted much of his father's teachings to his children, and this comes out in the book. I especially appreciated this having read Titan.
DR states it took 10 years to write his memoirs. He was 88 years old when they came out. The text reads very well and clearly DR and his editors spent considerable time perfecting everything (he had plenty of help).
One annoying aspect of the text is that the DR has a habit of downplaying problematic parts of his life and exaggerating the good parts. For instance, practically half way though he tells us that all of his kids have always hated him and thought he's an insensitive "capitalist pig" kind of person. His wife had lifelong problems with depression, which he only mentioned in passing. Additionally, towards the end of his extended tenure as CEO of Chase Manhattan Bank we learn that he almost got thrown out for performing poorly. How many times he says "in the end" everything turns out right or he did the right thing, I can't count. I guess if you're a JDR, Sr grandchild, it doesn't matter!
On the other hand, he was one of the 6 children/5 sons of JDR, Jr, who inherited almost the entire Rockefeller fortune. DR's life clearly was blessed with access to the cream of our society whereever he went. He had an active mind and despite what his kids may have initially thought about him, he had dedicated much of his life to public service. It was definitely a worthwhile read.
My next book will probably be Bernice Kert's very well received bio on Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, DR's mother and the driving force behind the MoMA, despite her husband's (JDR, Jr's) distaste for modern art.

Interesting way of life and adventure but.....

It is an interesting book, it reveals the way of life of a Rockefeller, it is amazing how with time a human being can change his values and the teachings of his father and mother, and become a person he does not even notice he is and what he is up to. I like his beginnings and they way he started his surroundings, I wish that he knew the truth and deep meaning of life, because if he did, He could have done a lot of good things for this planet and human race, with that energy and impulse, he could have done it.
The book it is a good read, for people who will like to know more about this family and David Rockefeller.

Fascinating and Important Life Story

I found this book fascinating. It is amazing that one man has so many amazing stories. David Rockefeller played a significant role in banking, politics, New York City real estate, international relations, and philanthropy in America, and the world. This book combines his incredible perspective with important history.
