About the Author
Bikramjit Basu, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. He is currently on leave at the Materials Research Center, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India. His research interests include processing-structure-property correlation in structural ceramics, including nanoceramics and nanocomposites as well as biomaterials and tribology of advanced materials. In recognition of his contributions to the field of ceramic and biomaterials science, he has received noteworthy awards from the Indian National Academy of Engineering (2004), the Indian National Science Academy (2005), the Metallurgist of the Year Award (2010) from the Indian government, and the NASI - SCOPUS Young Scientist Award (2010) from Elsevier and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI). He was the recipient of the Robert L. Coble Award for Young Scholars from the American Ceramic Society in 2008.
Kantesh Balani, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. His research focuses on the processing and characterization of carbon nanotube (CNT) based biomaterials, energy materials, and correlating mechanics at multiple length scales. He has received several recognitions as a Young Scientist, as well as a Young Engineer, for his contributions in the field of materials science.

Does not live up to its claims

The back cover says "A must-have for scientists", "an invaluable resource for teaching" and "an ideal reference for engineers and manufacturers".
It isn't.
Chapter 1 is a short but uneven survey of ceramics, perhaps useful for a first year undergraduate.
Chapter 2 begins with an unusual representation of Schrodinger's equation - then never uses or refers to it again, so including it is of no use to the student or engineer, most of whom would already have a sufficient knowledge of chemical bonding anyway. The introduction to crystallography is useful.
Chapter 3 on crack theories, fracture touhness, Weibull modulus and toughening mechanisms is quite good.
Chapter 4 on the synthesis of raw materials selects four materials, but ignores others that are much more commonly used.
Chapters 5 and 6 are badly organised, jumping back and forth between discussions of forming methods and discussions of sintering. Even then, the discussion of ball milling is poor: stainless steel milling balls are very rare, the only mention of wet milling omits water and the schematic diagram of the movement of balls in a mill is simply wrong. Chapter 6 mentions hot-rolling of aluminium metal, which has nothing to do with forming or sintering ceramics.
Chapter 7 is a muddle of descriptions of some of the desirable properties of ceramics. The two tables of fracture toughening mechanisms is confusing and could mislead the reader into thinking that some of the materials discussed are generally made by the methods shown to the properties listed.
Chapter 8 and 9 - no comment. I know little about thermal spraying or coating.
Chapter 10 on toughening zirconia is quite good.
Chapter 11 and 12 - no comment. I now little about Sialons or mixed carbides/nitrides
Chapter 13 purports to be about high temperature ceramics. It discusses only titanium diboride, gives a great deal of information about processing methods for titanium diboride, is interrupted by irrelevant illustrations and then says nothing about the high temperature properties or application of titanium diboride.
At this point I gave up. The book is a grab-bag of disconnected details but rarely treats any subject well.
The references are a compendious and useful guide to much better texts and papers.

Good Intro To Developments On Ceramics and Why They Are Desirable As Structural Materials

I am glad to have owned this book since it was one of the few topics that I never got take in my engineering classes. Ceramics are quite important materials in processes and projects which require high temperatures & pressures, low density, toughness, biological inertness, and corrosion resistance. They are relevant to many industries such as the electrical, petrochemical, aerospace, and automotive industries. There is a high demand for really strong materials which have metallic properties, but with the strength of ceramics. The MAX phase ceramics section really caught my attention due to the promise they have for meeting this demand in the future. One of the major issues with ceramics is the brittleness which causes major problems once they crack. They are durable until fractures begin to occur.
Overall this book is quite comprehensive of ceramics in general. The authors do an excellent job of giving an introduction to all the chapters which give a decent foundation to understand the contents of the rest of each chapter. Some of the information found here is not exclusive to ceramics, but are part of materials science and engineering in general (i.e hardness, stress, fracture analysis). To those who have read introductory textbooks like Materials Science and Engineering: An Introduction much of the base principles will be familiar. The authors use many pictures, diagrams, tables, and actual material sample photographs to clarify what they are talking about if there is some lack of clarity. Some chapters conclude with excellent bubble diagrams which give the overview of issues involved in those chapters. One of the downfalls of the book is that it does not have many case studies and does not give actual worked examples or problems. Its more of a review text with many formulas to calculate physical & mechanical properties, which is understandable. Other materials texts I have used are similar to this format. The synthesis of certain base ceramics is noted a few times throughout the text and conventional equipment and processes for making many ceramics and composites are included for future reference. Two good areas that get touched on a few places in the book are corrosion and nanotechnology. Ceramics are known for their corrosion resistance, but for more info on what corrosion is and how it affects materials like metals please read Principles and Prevention of Corrosion (2nd Edition). Its good to know about this and should give a glimpse of why ceramics are so desirable for this property alone. On nanotechnology, nanopowders are becoming more important since they hold promise for better control of grain sizes which in turn affect many physical and mechanical properties that may make engineering of parts less costly and more long lasting.

Discusses bonding characteristics of ceramics and how to predict physical properties, general ceramic properties: high melting point, low ductility, low density, high corrosion resistance, superior wear and abrasion resistance, etc; general intro to ionic & covalent bonding, different ceramic lattice structures
3 - Mechanical Behavior of Ceramics
Useful intro on theories and mathematical models on fracture toughness, cracking in brittle materials, approaches and tests on getting mechanical properties (i.e elastic modulus, fracture toughness, compressed & flex strength), mechanisms for toughening ceramics
4 - Synthesis of High Purity Ceramic Powders
Synthesis for making powders such as ZrO2, TiB2, HAp, and WC
5 - Sintering of Ceramics
Intro to sintering processes which densify powders to solids for reasons involving grain sizes, liquid phase and solid phase sintering are discussed
6 - Thermomechanical Sintering Methods
Details sintering processes such Hot Pressing, Extrusion, Hot Rolling; notes different ways of heating ceramic compacts
7 - Environment and Engineering of Ceramic Materials

Overall this book is a pretty good. For more specialized information on these topics one should look at the references in the end of each chapter. The price is very high so it probably would be best if one finds a copy at a university library if this book is appealing.

A nice overview with a lot of a lot of specific data

This book presents a very nice balance of overview material and recent data. The treatment of the material is general enough that it should be very accessible to engineers interested in high temperature or corrosive environments, chemists, physicists and biologists as well as for ceramists. It is also specific enough to be very useful for those who are very familiar with the basic material, but seek more information on advanced ceramics and their applications.
Ceramics have been used since time immemorial to make things like pots, cups and bricks, but their use has expanded greatly in the past 75 years or so. Newer ceramics are being used as coatings for materials to be used at very high temperatures, in very chemically aggressive environments and where parts wear against one another or against external surfaces. They are also being used as structural materials as well as coatings. This book treats all aspects of structural ceramics in a very readable manner, covering the following:
- an overview of ceramics - the nature of the bonding that holds the atoms together, the different types of ceramic crystal structures, and how ceramic structures are made (sintering and powder processing) or sprayed as coatings.
- a nice overview of the wear, corrosion and oxidation resistance, and fracture of these brittle materials, and how composites can improve their toughness.
- The last sections of the book deal with properties of different types of structural ceramics (for example, ceramic composites, Zirconia, titania and alumina based ceramics, SiALON ceramics, Nanocrystalline ceramics and non oxide ceramics such as those based on nitrides, Sillicides and carbides).
- the use of ceramics in high temperature and corrosive environment and well as those subject to wear. The book also covers bio-ceramics and applications as human implants.
As a metallurgist, I found this book particularly interesting and informative, but it should also be of great interest all for those interested in the topics listed above. The book is well-written and I found it to be a very valuable addition to my technical library.
