Personally, impatience drove me to the local B&N for my copy of this third & final installment of the Rage War trilogy. So just to be clear, this is book three and if you are checking out this listing then I feel justified in assuming that you have already consumed books one & two. If you haven’t, you may want to stop reading further as it will definitely spoil the experience. To start, the book offers a couple helpful pages refreshing us on what took place during “Incursion” & “Invasion”.

Then it jumps immediately back into the soup at Space Station Hell with General Alexander’s unrelenting search for the runaway android Liliya. A very interesting alien wrinkle** is added to the narrative through the scientific research of Isa “Yautja Woman” Palant & a new Predator. General Basset braces for war at Charon Station while the treacherous “Thirteen” over at Weyland–Yutani argue necessary solutions vs. desired profit margins. Elder Kalakta is still overseeing events from the Predator’s point of view, leaving you wondering what additional motives lie behind this cooperation. And finally, the armada of former Founder Beatrice Maloney has arrived in the Human Sphere to begin its all–out holocaust of the human race.

This past summer I really enjoyed this Tim Lebbon trilogy. So many Alien franchise offerings regurgitate the same formula, and even though this trilogy has that nefarious shadow of Weyland–Yutani, at least one sleazy corporate representative, some voices of reason & more than enough cannon fodder – this author also bravely breaks new ground allowing cause & effect to create some pretty definitive end results. The only problem with a good book is the experience goes by too fast, then we are left adrift in the vast reaches of literature, waiting for the next worthwhile fix. But I think it’s safe to say, if you were entertained by the first two releases you will not be disappointed, nor left unfazed, by this final installment.

Next up – The Alien vs. Predator Omnibus (reprinting Prey, Hunter’s Planet & War) due out on November 29, 2016 and Aliens: Bug Hunt, a collection of brand new short stories scheduled to be released April 18, 2017.

About the Author

Called out of this work to the ministry, he graduated with honors from seminary and now pastors Summit Lake Community Church in Mancos, Colorado.

Well written. Just not convincing...

I bought this book because of the title but I made the error of not researching the main objective of the author, which is to defend compatibilism and Calvinism. I think the book is very well written. Its not heavy reading and easy to understand. Chapter 1 does a masterful job of describing the libertarian view point. He hit the nail on the head. But, in subsequent chapters he seems to misrepresent some libertarian views and I think he actually contradicts what he wrote in Chapter 1. Perhaps he realized that Chapter 1 was making too much sense, so he needed to right the deterministic ship so to speak. I dont know. I have yet to read a book or article that leads me to believe that compatibilism is anything other than a watered down version of determinism. And, I am absolutely repulsed by any determistic beliefs; nor do I believe it fits with scripture. It ultimately leads to God being disingenuous and the author of sin in my estimation.

A thorough argument for the compatibilist position

Christensen’s goal is to clear the swamp that flows from these discussions on free will and divine predetermination. God controls the big picture of history, but what about our actual choices (3)? Christensen lays out his goal early on in the book,

“If the libertarian definition of free will is correct, then God is limited in his sovereignty. On the other hand, if the compatibilist view of man’s will is correct, then it not only is compatible with a robust view of divine sovereignty, but also preserves human freedom and responsibility. I will seek to show how the libertarian view of free will falls short of making sense of human experience and what Scripture teaches.” (7)

Layout

In the first two chapters Christensen lays out the ideas and the faults of the libertarian positions. After that he charges ahead with the compatibilist position, showing how it explains why good and bad things happen (chapters 5-6), what it means to be free (ch 7) and how this affects what we do (ch 8). He explains how we do what we want to do because of our nature (ch 9), and he gives his best shot at explaining why only some, and not all, come to faith in Christ (ch 10). A Christian’s new nature now wants to serve God, but it has to battle with the sin that remains (Ch 11). “True freedom consists in knowing the best and right choices, in being unhindered in making them, and in experiencing the greatest joy when we do make them. The right choices are the ones that God has prescribed through the morally binding instruction of his Word” (ch 12).

There are two appendices at the close of the book: In the first Christensen charts the “Libertarian and Compatibilist Beliefs on Free Agency.” In the second, he reviews Randy Alcorn’s, “hand in Hand: The Beauty of God’s Sovereignty and Meaningful Human Choice.” (Yes, that “hand” is lowercase).

A chapter summary, a glossary (found also at the book’s close), study questions, and/or resources for further study are found at the end of each chapter. Depending on your past interaction with the free will arguments, you may first want to slowly read through the definitions that are found at the end of each chapter before you read the chapter. This is especially important for the first two chapters which I found to be pretty difficult to get a handle on. I had to reread much of it before I could begin to understand what Christensen meant, but as you read on the rest of the book gets easier and helps explain these more difficult chapters.

I would have liked to have seen more information about the beliefs and pitfalls of the libertarian position. But one book can’t do everything. I’ll have to pick up a book by Roger Olsen to see the libertarian view from his Arminian perspective.

I was already convinced of the compatibilist position, but now I understand more about the downfalls of libertarianism and the biblical support for compatibilism.

About the Author
Louis P. Pojman (1935-2005) was Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at the United States Military Academy and a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. He received an M.A. and Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary/Columbia University. He was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Copenhagen and a Rockefeller Fellow at Hamburg University. He received his D.Phil. in Philosophy from Oxford University in 1997.His first position was at the University of Notre Dame, after which he taught at the University of Texas at Dallas. Later, at the University of Mississippi, he served for three years as Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion. In 1995, he became Professor of Philosophy at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He most recently was Visiting Professor at Brigham Young University in Utah and Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Oxford University. Pojman won several research and teaching awards, including the Burlington Northern Award for Outstanding Teaching and Scholarship (1988) and the Outstanding Scholar/Teacher in the Humanities at the University of Mississippi (1994). He wrote in the areas of philosophy of religion, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy and authored or edited more than 30 books and 100 articles. Louis Pojman passed away in 2005.

Disjointed garbage.

This book was required for an ethics class at school. I am a 4.0 student with a fairly robust vocabulary and I struggle to even try to figure out what the author is saying. The author is all over the place in this book and frequently makes arguments that seemingly are not based in logic whatsoever. The arguments are sometimes so simplistic that I feel like it is watching a group of kids saying, "I know you are, but what I am I?" Reading this book almost caused me to be stuck in a permanent facepalm pose. Please do not read this if you do not have to.

If Pojman doesn't like a view (e

I am an instructor at a community college where this book is used. This is the second semester that I have used it to teach in an Intro to Ethics course. While other users have fairly commented on the disjointed nature of the text (i.e. he seems to flow from one thing to another without presenting a cohesive picture), and the overly technical presentation for an introduction, my major problem with this book is that is promotes a certain view of ethics rather than laying out various views and allowing the student to critically engage each of them. If Pojman doesn't like a view (e.g. the religious view or egoism) he simply presents a strawman version of the argument and proceeds to tear it down. In this pursuit he makes absurd comments such as: "[No religion] seem[s] to have sufficient evidence for their claims to win over a large number of rational people (p.21)". If you are a student where this is required reading, then you will have to work harder and look elsewhere for a more balanced presentation of ethics.
