Because of its fruitful development, a systematic exposition of some of the main parts of the theory is now desirable. In addition to this exposition, these notes contain a recasting of the theory in the more general setting where the underlying Rn is replaced by a homogeneous group.

The justification for this wider scope comes from two sources: 1) the theory of semi-simple Lie groups and symmetric spaces, where such homogeneous groups arise naturally as "boundaries," and 2) certain classes of non-elliptic differential equations (in particular those connected with several complex variables), where the model cases occur on homogeneous groups. The example which has been most widely studied in recent years is that of the Heisenberg group.

About the Author
Mike Major began his musical journey as a drummer at the age of 11. After many years of playing in bands, Mike started doing live sound and working in recording studios. He was employed for 16 years by South Coast Audio, a regional sound reinforcement company in El Paso, Texas, where he was a system tech and front-of-house technician. He also managed Rosewood Studio from 1987-2005, where he recorded hundreds of artists, including At The Drive-In, Sparta, Holly Dunn, and many more. He currently lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, with his wife, Jessica, and his children, Aidan and Erin. He runs Mike's Mix Room, his personal mix studio, where he provides mixing and mastering services for clients from all over the world.

Good Info here and there

I'm not sure how many times the author says "this topic is beyond the scope of this book."

Way too much fluff in the book, it could be cut down to about 100 pages of very useful information.

So on one hand, it's fluffy and sort of annoying at times, and on the other hand there is some great info hidden within the chapters.

In some places you wish the author would explain something further and he doesn't.

Example: The author mentions using the Mid/Side technique in the chapter about Stereo Mic Techniques and simply mentions the fact that you have to decode the Side mic by saying "you have to split the side signal into two signals and then flip the polarity of one of them" NEVER goes into how to go about taking a mono, figure 8 mic, and splitting that into 2 signals!

Yet, the author spends page after page explaining the controls on a compressor, something that is explained again and again in just about every book on the planet.

I have picked up some new things that I will be trying though so this book is not a total loss, it's just going to be hard to go back and find what I wanted to try among all the fluff in the book.

Recording Drums: A must!!

Not only does Mike Major have the technical knowledge after countless years working in the studio, but his love and appreciation for the craft of creating music puts his work above the standard. I ordered 2 copies, one for myself and one to share with another budding recordist. This is a must for anyone from the novice to the seasoned pro. Mike's techniques and insight are sure to make any project sound better.

About the Author

Prof. Gusz Eiben received his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1991. He was among the pioneers of evolutionary computing research in Europe, and served in key roles in steering committees, program committees and editorial boards for all the major related events and publications. His main research areas focused on multiparent recombination, constraint satisfaction, and self-calibrating evolutionary algorithms; he is now researching broader aspects of embodied intelligence and evolutionary robotics.

Prof. James E. Smith received his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1998. He is an associate professor of Interactive Artificial Intelligence and Head of the Artificial Intelligence Research Group in the Dept. of Computer Science and Creative Technologies of The University of the West of England, Bristol. His work has combined theoretical modelling with empirical studies in a number of areas, especially concerning self-adaptive and hybrid systems that "learn how to learn". His current research interests include optimization; machine learning and classification; memetic algorithms; statistical disclosure control; VLSI design verification; adaptive image segmentation and classification and computer vision systems for production quality control; and bioinformatics problems such as protein structure prediction and protein structure comparison.
