About the Author
Sharon Katz Cooper is a science educator and freelance writer who specializes in science and social studies topics. She has written more than 25 books for children, including a series called Horrible Habitats, which was recommended by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). She is based in Pittsburgh, Penn., where she lives with her husband and three boys, Reuven, Judah, and Yaron.

Tom Leonard has been a freelance illustrator for more than 20 years. A graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art (now called the University of the Arts) with a degree in Illustration, he has worked for numerous publications throughout his career, including Psychology Today, Reader’s Digest, International Wildlife, and Science Digest. Since 1993 he has focused on children’s books, usually with a view toward nature. Tom has had several shows throughout Philadelphia, and his work has appeared in the Graphis Annual and the Society of Illustrators. Tom teaches at the University of the Arts and also teaches summers at Fleisher Art Memorial, where he has exhibited his work on several occasions. Tom lives in South Philadelphia with his wife, Rose.

Beautiful and educational!

Educational picture books are some of my favorite books to read with my son. Not only does he learn something (without realizing it), but the pictures in the book are usually stunning. The books I am telling you about today are a perfect example of that are part of the "Extraordinary Migration" series from Capstone.

When Crabs Cross the Sand tells the migration story of one red crab (out of millions) on Christmas Island who once a year migrates toward the Indian Ocean. It begins with a female crab waking up after being tucked in her burrow for winter. With the rainy season beginning, all the crabs are waking up and heading to the ocean. The journey takes approximately a week and is perilous. When they arrive at the ocean, they must dive in or else risk drying out. Afterwards, a male crab and female crab mate. The male then returns to the forest, and the female crab waits for the moon and tide to be just right so she (and all other female crabs) can lay their eggs in the ocean. The female crab heads back to the forest and the eggs immediately hatch. Those that are not eaten by fish grow for one month in the ocean, and then they instinctively head to the forest.

When Whales Cross the Sea tells the migration story of one gray whale who makes the longest migration of any mammal in the world, travelling 5000 to 7000 miles. It is October in the Arctic with feeding season almost over. This female whale must make her way south to warmer waters. Before the journey, she eats nonstop for several days - over one ton a day. The journey is dangerous, and because of that, the whale never stops swimming, not even to eat. The migration takes 60 days, which is amazing, because shortly after the journey ends, she gives birth to a calf. At a "small" 1,000 pounds, he must put on a lot more weight, because he will have to make the return journey with his mother in a few months. He drinks about 50 gallons of milk a day and can gain approximately 60 pounds a day.

Each book tells a fascinating story with very detailed and real-to-life illustrations. At the end of each book is a glossary, fact page, and suggestions for further reading. The age range for these books is 5-8, so you will probably have to read them with your kids, but that's okay because you'll enjoy them as much as they do. I know I did! There are two other books in this series - When Penguins Cross the Ice and When Butterflies Cross the Sky. I haven't read them, but I am sure they are as great as these two are.

What a gorgeous book! Beautiful illustrations. I read this as an e-book and would love to see the print version. When Whales Cross the Sea teaches children the habits of gray whales who must migrate between 5,000 and 7,000 miles from their summer to winter home.

Although this book is written for young children, I personally learned facts about whales that I never knew before, such as gray whales can live up to 60 years old and have two blow holes. The easy-to-read paragraphs are informative and written in a friendly manner that encourage out-loud book reading. There is a section at the end entitled "Gray whale fast facts".

A must have for every school and kindergarden library.

K and I both enjoyed this story. We got to follow a mother whale on her journey to warmer waters. This is a very informative book that is filled with how much whales eat, how long of a journey they take getting from cold waters to warmer waters. K's favorite part within the story was the calf, and how he drank milk from his mother. K found that to be interesting. The illustrations were beautiful done and went perfect with the story.
This is one book I would love to own in paperback and add to our book collections. I do believe this is one book we will be reading again.

Lifesaver

This book is the sole reason I am able to comprehend the dense grammar course I am currently taking with my extremely knowledgable professor. This makes sense of the textbook if you do the exercises. However, I just wish in general the authors had a better sense of organization. The chapters presented in both books seem random. However, there is good information mixed in for those willing to dig.

About the Author
Russell Kane was born in Enfield, Essex, in 1980. His life-long love of literature meant that he read his way out of Ecstasy pills, cannabis and a job as a shop assistant, into a first-class degree and a job at an ad agency. He made Head of Copy in eighteen months. Then a colleague suggested stand-up comedy as a way of letting off steam and creative juice in the evening. Within two years, Kane had left the world of advertising to become a professional comedian and won last year's Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show, the most prestigious prize in UK comedy. The Humorist is his first novel.

disappointing

I think I got this book by mistake, thinking it to be an autobiography of this comedian, whose work I enjoy very much. (There are probably autobiographical elements in the story such as his hair dyes, his prancing around and his racist father.)

It turns out to be a very odd story that doesn't engage very much. If musicologists spoil music by splitting it into bits and analysing them, then this is what the hero of this book does with jokes. I suppose comedians do analyse jokes to see how they effect audiences - and the joke in this book is literally deadly.

The author is intelligent but I think he is trying to be too clever by his use of words, some of which one feels he has just looked up, like a school boy, in a dictionary and feels that he must drop them into a sentence so as to show off his erudition as soon as possible. I had to look up `philtrum' = a vertical groove in the middle area of the upper lip, common to many mammals, extending from the nose to the upper lip...

Benjamin White was born without the ability to laugh but with a gift of understanding humor and laughter. He was also secretly in love with his married cousin Becky. Working as a comedy critic, White had an ambition - to laugh. He worked quietly to distill the essence of laughter and create the perfect joke in the hope that performing it would make everyone including himself laugh. In the course of that process he takes us to meet Professor Leavey, an old exponent of the art of laughter who had written a book on laughter called "The Greek Philosopher's Joke", but Leavey does not think that comedy is an art. Still, White was determined to find that formula, and as he tracked Leavey he began to have strange dreams in which he would see how his perfectly crafted and perfectly delivered joke fall flat to an unimpressed audience. We follow his quest and gradually see the twisted mind behind the hidden genius and soon find ourselves in the midst of a horrifying finale, the essence of dark humour.

Sexy soap opera of a read

First published in 1997, this is a real tv mini-series of a read. Only, if this had been made into a three parter it would have to have been either very heavily edited or shown way after the watershed - this story is stuffed full of graphic sex! A story of the fabulously wealthy, rich and powerful loaded with betrayals, counter betrayals, revenge and retribution – I was hooked! The characters, for the most part, are all gorgeous and randy as anything with the morals of alley cats – if Armani sold knickers with rip cords, they would wear them as they hopped their way from bed to bed to kitchen table.

The plot itself is way over the top, deliciously so in fact. It is pure escapism as it twists and turns. Every few pages I found myself gasping “I can’t believe he/she said/did that!”.

I really loved this sexy soap opera of a read – I think it appealed to the part of me that loves to watch programmes like Dallas and Revenge. Warning though – the sex is graphic and there is lots of it, so if that is not your cup of tea then you might find yourself skipping pages.

Good Read

Thank goodness I've found a book by this author that I liked. I've read 3 other books by her on recs from other readers will not read any of hers again. Why not you say? Beacuse theyre all draaawwwnn out...so many supporting characters it's hard to figure out or keep it together. Lest we forget the endings of all her books are quite abrupt! Badda bing badda boom! So like I'm saying..wait! wait!..what the heck just happened? After you've read and read (her books are lengthy) it just ends folks! Never any epilogues, as I think author is exhausted in the end.
Back to this book. Again, many supporting characters and quite lengthy but it has some meats in it to keep you interested. I subtracted one star because AGAIN it ended abruptly. Yikes!

I am such a fan of Susan Lewis that she really can do no wrong in my eyes (except her two biographical books which was a bit of a let down). Wildfire did not dissappoint in the least.I love a story with a happy ending even if our heroine had been through many travails due to falling for the wrong man but Max was such a 'good catch'that it masde up for all her previous wrong choices.
