About the Author
Ruwan Rajapakse is presently a project manager for STV Incorporated, one of the most prominent design firms in New York City. He has extensive experience in design and construction of piles and other geotechnical engineering work. He is a licensed professional engineer (PE) in New York and New Jersey and a certified construction manager (CCM). He is currently an adjunct professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology conducting the graduate level geotechnical engineering course. He is the author of four books including Geotechnical Engineering Calculations and Rule of Thumb and Pile Design and Construction Rules of Thumb by Butterworth-Heinemann.

Great reference for the HR Generalist

As a Human Resource Generalist one is responsible for a vast amount of knowledge. As I researched which general reference book to add to my library, I consulted the "HRCI's PHR and SPHR Certification Guide" for which books and authors most frequently appeared in the notes. I found this book/authors the most. This is the most recent editoin and covers an extensive amount of information. A good feature is the frequent recommendations for places on the internet where one can investigate the topics further. Great book teaching the basics and more of HR

This book is amazing. It makes learning the basic of human resources so easy and interesting. Before I read this book, I was unaware of how many aspects of HR there was. It really helps anyone learn the basics. The text brings up real-world examples and scenarios that really make it fun to read.

If you are an instructor, please do your students a favor and choose this book. The price is really high for such a small book but it really is worth it due to how well it explains the material. Oh yeah, I have no affiliation with the publisher and am basing this review on the twelfth edition.

Wonderful short story

Artaban is a Magi and has decided to meet up with the "known" wise men who are journeying to find the King of the Jews. Artaban sets out with three precious stones for the King, but gets delayed and the wise men leave without him. By the time he makes it to Bethlehem, things have changed and the King is gone.

Artaban doesn't give up and spends the next 33 years searching for the King. His journey ends in Jerusalem with poetic results.

This short story is one of the best I think I've ever read. The descriptions were so realistic I felt like I could see Artaban and what he was experiencing. When I reached the end, my eyes were welling up with tears as I understood his journey at the same time he did. The story was so good, I only wish I had learned about it earlier.

I saw the movie version first and loved it. The book is a good read.

I saw the 1985 made-for-TV movie version with Martin Sheen and Alan Arkin several years ago, and it really moved me at the time. I recently bought the DVD and watched it again and it is still a pretty powerful message. I finally picked up the book and enjoyed it, also. A timeless reminder that when we follow after Jesus, the fruit of our actions as we live our daily lives speaks volumes. Highly recommend it.

A Christmas Eve tradition

In the 1950's my father started the tradition of reading the story of the Other Wiseman on Christmas Eve. We always knew this was not a factual story, but it imparted some very important lessons. The Other Wiseman, a Magi, saw a sign in the sky and arranged with other members of his sect to journey to meet the King. His meeting with his comrades was delayed when he stopped to help a man in need and as a result he missed the prearranged meeting time. Over the next 33 years the Magi encounters and helps other people in need, each time narrowing missing the King.

As children we learned only the story of the Other Wiseman. As adults the truths in the story became clear. My father passed away this year and reading the story again brought back memories and reinforced the lessons he wanted us to learn.

The best book to start big projects.

OpenStack is a structure with other projects inside working as blocks of a major structure that is it, the best of this book is that it teaches you what blocks you need to build your cloud service, there isn't much sources available that teaches you make it in practical way like this.

The book introduces the OpenStack talking about the architecture, usage, advantages and the other options if your project need other features. Then the book introduces all the blocks in sequence of what your project need, sometimes the other options, teaches how to configure and to solve basic troubles. Then when you have a working cloud, are introduced advanced optional features like Heat and Ceilometer, that I think most of your real projects will need, so its awesome to have it on the book. At the end they mention other alternatives and how to apply the concepts in other releases, which is very useful to have near when your project need more specific solutions.

My experience reading and applying was good, the book is very descriptive on what you need to do and why you can understand the process, is like a house, and the book start from the blueprints, at the end you can build almost all kind of buildings because you understand the concepts, so I liked and recommend this book.

"Learning OpenStack" is a clearly written book that a new OpenStack user will find valuable. It describes the components of OpenStack in an easily understandable way and offers contrasts to other commonly used frameworks (i.e. AWS) to help illustrate how things work.
The book begins with an overview of the entire framework, then provides a chapter on each of the major services. The user is given very plain step-by-step instructions on how to install and configure each service, and adequate explanation of why these steps are being taken.
Illustrations are simple and informative. They convey information about the major components in an OpenStack installation.
For new OpenStack users, this book will be a valuable reference. I recommend it.

Tanya Altmann, MD, FAAP, is a practicing pediatrician who founded Calabasas Pediatrics, and an assistant clinical professor at Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA. Save Your Money and Search Online

The only thing I regret about this book is buying it instead of just loaning it from the Library. It has very useful information in it, and I like that it has fun recipes; but quite honestly, I can get the same information on the internet for free. I was hoping there would be a little more sustenance to this book, but it's not worth the money.

I'm currently pregnant with my first and planning for the future. This book was a fantastic read. Very down to earth, real advice about feeding. More importantly, it's based on research. I'll definitely be following her feeding plans for my little one!

About the Author
Mark Allen Weiss is a Professor in the School of Computing and Information Sciences at Florida International University in Miami Florida. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from The Cooper Union in 1983, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University in 1987, working under Bob Sedgewick. He has been at FIU since 1987, and was promoted to Professor in 1996. His interests include data structures, algorithms, and education, and he is most well-known for his highly-acclaimed Data Structures textbooks, which have been used at hundreds of universities worldwide.

Good Code, Terrible Explanations

I am using this book in a class on Data Structures and Algorithms. This book has a lot of material and code in it which makes it good. However, his explanations are terrible. They are ambiguous and unclear. If you can teach yourself from the code, then this is a good book for you. If your looking for clear explanations, look somewhere else.

algorithms are primary, Java is secondary

The book teaches two things. Algorithms that are very useful in computing. And how these can be coded in Java.

The explanation of the algorithms requires a reasonable amount of mathematical sophistication on your part. They all relate to discrete maths, and cover topics like sorting, random number generation and graphs. The complexity of the discussion is less than that in Knuth's "Art of Computer Programming". Perhaps more akin to Sedgewick or Aho's algorithms texts. There is a fair amount of abstraction that you'll have to deal with.

The other task in the book is explaining how Java is well suited in which to code these algorithms. Weiss also makes good use of the Java interface ability. If you think of an algorithm as being implemented in a subroutine [ie. a procedural approach], then the book uses interfaces to let you design a program at a higher level, and making it quite modular and independent of specific implementations of given algorithms.

The book does deal with Java 5. But perhaps the most important aspect of Java used in the book is the interface. So the book is quite germane even if you are using an earlier Java.

But what if you program in another language? Is the book relevant? Quite possibly. Firstly, some other languages, like C#, have interfaces. More importantly, if you regard the algorithms as the most important aspect of the book, and you are a skilled programmer, then coding is the easier aspect.

A remark to a lecturer: If you are teaching a course and are contemplating this book as its text, be careful. Try to ensure that the expected background of your class is compatible with the book. For example, if they will be experienced Java programmers, but have little maths knowledge (and this combination is certainly possible), then the book may not be very useful to them.
