About the Author
R. David Gustafson is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Rock Valley College in Illinois and has also taught extensively at Rockford College and Beloit College. He is coauthor of several best-selling mathematics textbooks, including Gustafson/Frisk/Hughes' COLLEGE ALGEBRA, Gustafson/Karr/Massey's BEGINNING ALGEBRA, INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA: A COMBINED APPROACH, and the Tussy/Gustafson and Tussy/Gustafson/Koenig developmental mathematics series. His numerous professional honors include Rock Valley Teacher of the Year and Rockford's Outstanding Educator of the Year. He has been very active in AMATYC as a Midwest Vice-president and has been President of IMACC, AMATYC's Illinois affiliate. He earned a Master of Arts from Rockford College in Illinois, as well as a Master of Science from Northern Illinois University.

Not very helpful.

The examples in the beginning of the chapter do not always help solve the problems and are sometimes very unclear.

I really don't like the way this company does their math books

I really don't like the way this company does their math books. They will show you examples, then the homework will ask you perform problems that are very much beyond what it showed you examples of. It has caused me to do a lot of extra work, outside of the book, trying to figure out the answers to questions asked in the book.

Perfect rental book!

When I did get the opportunity to use this book, it seemed to be very clear in its examples and provided many exercises at the end of the chapters. But, if I had to do it again, I would purchase the additional guide book along with this one since the even number answers were not provided.

About the Author
Jonathan Goldman is Associate Professor of Musicology at the Université de Montréal, and specializes in twentieth-century music history. Editor-in-Chief of the journal Circuit, musiques contemporaines, he wrote the preface to Leçons de musique (2005), a collection of Boulez's writings published in France.

Describes the features that make Boulez's late music so different -- and so much more ravishing -- than the Darmstadt-era pieces

Although Pierre Boulez made his name as an enfant terrible in the '40s and '50s with radically abstract bleep-bloopy works, his style changed to glittering works that were based on, if not exactly traditional themes, then at least perceptible motifs treated in kaleidoscopic variation that dazzle the ear. Jonathan Goldman's 2011 book THE MUSICAL LANGUAGE OF PIERRE BOULEZ traces the French composer's shifting stylistic preferences over the decades.

In the first part Goldman examines the changing tone of Boulez's voluminous writing. Boulez's earliest essays are obsessed with the idea of the series, and his preferred form for a piece is simply the exhaustion of a series' possibilities, no more and no less. As time goes by, Boulez shows a much greater interest in the proliferation of material instead of the dry working-out of a series. In such texts as the College de France lectures (still not translated into English), he comes to advocate forms that the listener perceives as an overall envelope, filled with auditory signposts marking the course of the piece. The evolution of Boulez's aesthetic is visible not only in the composer's comments about his own music, but also in the way he looks at earlier music. Goldman exemplifies this by describing Boulez's successive analyses of Webern's Cantata No. 2 op. 31, which initially dwell on the series and are somewhat deprecative of the piece, but years later come to express an appreciation for Webern's quasi-thematic writing.

In the second part, Goldman points to these changing priorities by analysing five works from Boulez's late period: "Rituel", "Dérive 1", "Mémoriale", "Anthèmes" and "Incises". (I must say that I think it's a pity that Goldman chose to look at the bloated 2001 version of "Incises" instead of the taut 1994 original, which in my opinion is Boulez's best work for piano.) Now, one doesn't have to read an analysis to "get" these late works, as they speak to any open-minded listener. I fell in love with the prismatic colours and driving momentum of these pieces long before I knew anything about music theory. Still, Boulez fans of an academic bent will enjoy the specifics of how Boulez makes these pieces so sensuous and attractive.

Goldman's book is a useful contribution, since the hitherto most detailed survey of Boulez's music in English, Dominique Jameux's Pierre Boulez, stops with in the early 1980s with "Répons", and gives the most detail to Boulez's earlier music.

This is a remarkable book - a must read for every parent, parent-to-be, and teacher! I read it shortly after its publication, and was so impressed that I called and also spoke with Barbara Tizard, its British author and educational researcher. I also gave individual copies to the members of the board of our local school district, who were debating whether to open a program for three-year-olds in our middle-to-upper class neighborhood.

To compare the intellectual effectiveness of school and home, respectively, of preschoolers in two-parent families on public assistance, Dr. Tizard wired the preschoolers with tiny microphones and followed them into the two environments. As I remember, the experiment was rather lengthy - perhaps several months long.

The outcomes were stunning - even to the researchers, as I recall; across the board the children experienced dramatically more teachable moments and had more intellectual leaps in their homes than they did at school. Because instant responses by parents were able to satisfy immediately the questions children asked, the children were able to grasp a concept at the exact time they exhibited curiosity about it. If my memory serves me correctly, the individual interactions at school between the child and the teacher were at a bare minimum, and mainly were limited to comments such as, " Johnny, please give the glue back to Susie," or "Tell Jenny to quit kicking me", rather than intellectually speculating about why something floats or sinks.

On the other hand, even the poor home offered a ripe environment for the opportunity of satisfying curiosity. After arriving at home after a morning at preschool, a little girl, while eating her lunch, asked her mother why the roof was slanted. The recorder picked up the mother's reply and subsequent discussion (snow, gravity, etc.) as both mother and child pondered this profound scientific concept.

Good but not perfect. Dated. Unique.

This is a two volume series, reasonably sized. It attempts to capture all of Petroleum Engineering in one shot. For students, professors, and workers. It's been out of print for some time, and look at the price! Clearly, people are clinging to their copies, so it must be doing something right.

According to the preface, the major objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive practical reference manual. He saw the need when flipping through his many books while sitting for the Professional Engineering Exam. Nobody had yet published a single "textbook" style reference. This was his attempt.

I am quite torn reviewing this book. Mian does so many things right. He covers nearly every subject. There are 250 solved example problems for hands-on application. Tons of charts. The book is entirely self-contained. With so many great points, why not 5 stars?

First, the printing style is terrible. Grainy and sprawled. This is a shame, because Mian clearly took pains to do this book right. Yet the reader is constantly flipping through pages due to the poor editing/printing. With better publishing, this book would be a gem. I have both volumes, know them well, and yet dread opening due to the print style alone.

Second, it's dated. Lots of number tables are included from the pre-computer era. And while it seems to have been written (at least partly) for he PE exam, I never once opened this book while taking the exam (of course the exam has changed a lot since this book was published). Also, the exam seems to be based upon SPE references, and this book is not. So while Mian provides lots of details in his book that I have found useful over the years, his approach is rarely used elsewhere. Sort of sad, but that's just the way it is.

I own this book (both volumes) and wouldn't give it away. If it was updated and went back into print, I would certainly buy it again. But if I was an engineer new to this book, I wouldn't take the plunge unless it was updated first.

Roberta L. Sejnost is a university professor and literacy consultant who has taught secondary-level courses in social studies, reading, and English, and college-level courses in literacy, authentic assessment, brain-based learning, multiple intelligences, and cooperative learning. A nationally recognized staff developer and certified trainer, Sejnost has presented at over 200 educational conferences across the country. In 2003, she received the Reading Educator of the Year award from the Illinois Reading Council. Sejnost received a master of education degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a doctorate of education in curriculum and Instruction from Loyola University, Chicago.

Excellent perspective from middle school students' points of view. A great gift book to give a student teacher or a seasoned teacher. A fun read, but informative, too. This book would be great for a teacher book club or for professional development.
